subsp. nov.

Jacobaea othonnae subsp. adamsii Sutorý , subsp. nova

Type:— GEORGIA. Senecio clavenum . Iberia , Hoffman’s general herbarium 06784, [ J. M. F. Adams 1800–1802] ( MW, holotype) ( Fig. 3) .

Diagnosis:—Involucres and the synflorescence hirsute with short trichomes ( Fig. 4 A View FIGURE 4 ).

Distribution: —Eastern Georgia, Armenia, north-eastern Turkey, Azerbaijan and Iran. The border line in Georgia between this subspecies and the typical plants is almost identical with the border of the “ subtropical wet humid zone of the sea” in the west and the two remaining zones in the east, “ subtropical climate of the of the sea wet ” and “moderate humid subtropical transition to the subtropics of the previous Asian mountain regions” ( Shetekauri & Kuthatheladze 2017).

Eponymy:—The name of the subspecies commemorates the collector Johann Friedrich Adam, later called Michael Friedrich Adams (1780 Moscow – 1838 Vereya).

Mabberley (1982: 69) pointed at the existence of the name Cacalia pinnata in the form “ Cacalia pinnata [Adams ex] G.F. Hoffm., Hortus Mosquensis: 7 (1808), nom. superfl. for Senecio othonnae Bieb. (Compositae) ˮ. As he correctly noted, this name was validly published by Hoffmann (1808) with a reference to Senecio othonnae M. Bieb. and is therefore a superfluous illegitimate substitute name. Its resurrection as a subspecies of Jacobaea othonnae would be nomenclaturally impossible (ICN Art. 6.3, Note 2; Art. 52.1), therefore a new name should be created. Willdenow’s (1809) later isonym, published only one year later, has a short description in which he does not mention any pubescence of the described plants but clearly refers to the finder “ detexit celeberimus Adams ”, indicating the collector of Hoffman’s specimen. This must also be disregarded (ICN Art. 6.3, Note 2). As a holotype, we designated Adams’ specimen in Hoffmann’s collection. Another specimen with the name Cacalia pinnata collected by Adams is deposited in Willdenow’s herbarium ( Ledebour 1845): Habitat in alpibus Caucasi; in monte Kaischaur [Kaishaurni, 42° 26’ 29” N, 44° 30’ 38” E] & Alwart Iberae, B-W 15064-01 1. https://plants.jstor.org/stable/10.5555/al.ap.specimen. b%20-w%2015064%20-01%201.

Both specimens were undated but collected in his journeys across Transcaucasia in the years 1800–1802.
