Atraphaxis davurica View in CoL and A. selengensis from Russian Transbaikalia are not related to A. pungens and A. frutescens
The results of Maximum Likelihood (ML) and Bayesian analyses (BI) applied for the combined 3-plastid loci clearly demonstrate that the plants from Russian Transbaikalia are not related to A. pungens or A. frutescens by maternal lineage and evolved autochthonously.
Within the Transbaikalian subclade, A. davurica and A. selengensis form two well supported subclades and demonstrate clear distinctions in the morphology of their life form, leaf blades, generative shoots and thyrses, ochreas, perianths and styles.
Perianth morphology of A. selengensis resembles that of A. bracteata and is the main characteristic that differentiates A. selengensis from A. davurica .
Atraphaxis davurica and A. selengensis differ from A. pungens and A. frutescens with longer ochreas, longer styles, and minutely tuberculate fruit surface. Atraphaxis davurica has spongy stigmas, A. selengensis has compact globular stigmas. The stigmas are spherical in A. frutescens , and bent or slightly beveled out in A. pungens .
