General distribution and habitats. A common species in Palaearctic ( Bielecki et al. 2011; Ropelewska et al. 2014). Distributed in Denmark, Germany and many countries in the southwestern Mediterranean part of the western Palaearctic like Spain (e.g. Grosser et al. 2014), Italy, Balkan ( Nesemann & Neubert 1999), also reported by Bennike (1940), Grosser & Pešić (2006) and Salimi et al. (2011) from western Iran. Living in littoral zones of shallow ponds and lakes or banks of slow running streams underside of stones or in muddy substrate and sometimes burrowing in decaying materials in water like logs or foliages.
Descriptive features and remarks. Medium sized cylindrical leeches (to 50 mm). Anterior part of body cylindrical. Two lateral keels posterio-laterally. Male and female genital pores in furrow of clitellar annuli b2/a2 and c11/c12, respectively. Genital pores separated by 2 or 2.5 annuli. Body uni-colored red-brown with one or two pairs of dorsal dark para-median stripes. Ventrally brighter than dorsal and often light red. Shallow furrow between annuli.
