Description. Forewings 1.8 times longer than wide, length in male 5.9–6.2 mm (mean = 6.0, n= 3). Colour stramineous to light brown. Forewings lightly and uniformly infuscated, darker marks between middle sections of Cu1 and Ms1b (sometimes faint), and along anterior apical crossveins; veins orange to red, but claval veins stramineous. Hindwings very faintly infuscated; veins light orange, bases and claval veins stramineous. Facial carinae contiguous up to lower level of eyes; rostrum reaching hind coxae; subantennal processes well -, lateral carinae of pronotum poorly developed. Forewings with apical part of Sc slightly sinuate; Sc+R fork well before middle of wing; Ms1 branching near its base. Pygofer of male genitalia with prominent lateral projections; anal segment with short lateral processes. Genital styles nearly rhomboid; proximal dorsal process short and slender, distal dorsal process long; a small hump between both processes. Apical part of aedeagus short and wide near junction with stem, near apex flat, extending into a short, pointed tip.

Etymology. The species is named for the collector and ' dohertyi ' is a latinized noun used in the genitive case.

Type material. Holotype ♂ (forewing 6.2 mm), INDIA: ASSAM; labels: 1) Ind. Mus./ Margherita/ Assam/ W. Doherty 2) From Ind. Mus./ Distant Coll./ B.M. 1911-383 ( BMNH) . Paratypes. Khasis, IV.1894, 1 ♂ (fw. 5.9),Nat. Coll. ( MMBC); INDIA: Eastern Himalayas , Kurseong, 4700–5000 ft., Annandale, 20. VI . 10, 1 ♂ (fw. 5.9) ( BMNH) .

Distribution. Assam, India.

Diagnosis. Rhotana dohertyi resembles R. miles sp. nov. from Borneo and the Philippines. However, it is larger, lighter, and has additional forewing marks between Cu1 and Ms1b, as well as along the apical crossveins. The male aedeagus lacks slender pointed processes at the tip and prominent projections on the stem.
