Rhotana septemmaculata Distant, 1907: 410 View in CoL
( Figs. 56-58, 234)
Redescription. Forewings 2.1 times longer than wide, length 3.8–4.2 mm. Colour stramineous to light brown. Forewings with a group of seven brown-black marks; area in front of these marks covered with white powder; rest of wing glassy, with faintly infuscated bands from clavus tip to first subcostal sector, along Ms2, Ms3, 2nd subcostal sector, middle of M, apical cross-veins, and just before apical margin; veins stramineous but last subcostal sector, anterior apical cross-veins, apical margin, and veins between forewing marks tinted with orange or light orange to orange-brown. Hindwings colourless. Facial carinae separated; subantennal processes and lateral carinae of pronotum well developed. Forewings with costal margin and apical part of Sc nearly straight; Sc+R fork slightly before middle of wing; Ms1 branched at end of basal quarter, apical part of Ms1b connected to Cu1 by a short cross-vein, a triangle at base of Ms1; Cu1 not quite reaching hind margin. Male genitalia with pygofer narrow. Genital styles broadening towards the end; proximal dorsal process triangular, distal dorsal process elongated. Aedeagus with a thick stem; apical portion ending in two lobes, the right one longer, the tip of the right lobe and the sides of the left lobe armed with spines.
Etymology. The species name is a Latin adjective (septemmaculatus, -a, -um = with seven marks).
Type material. Lectotype ♂ (here designated) (forewing 3.8 mm), AUSTRALIA; labels: 1) Type 2) Rhotana septemmaculata / type Dist. 3) Queensland / F.P. Dodd / 1902-319 ( BMNH).
Note. Distant described this species from an unspecified number of specimens and BMNH contains two specimens which match Distant’s (1907) original data. We designate the male as lectotype .
Other material examined. AUSTRALIA: 1 ♀ (paralectotype of R. septemmaculata, BMNH ) .
Distribution. Australia (Queensland).
Diagnosis. Rhotana septemmaculata is similar to R. pavo (Bierman) from Sumatra and Borneo, as well as to R. globosa sp. nov. from New Guinea. It can be separated from these by the veins between the forewing marks not being bright red, and by the male aedeagus bearing numerous spines.
