Description. Forewings 2.0 times longer than wide, length about 4 mm. Colour brown, tinted with red, ventrally stramineous; facial carinae more reddish; legs stramineous but fore tibiae and tarsi tinted with red, abdomen bright red, genitalia dark reddish grey. Forewings infuscated; veins brown tinted with red, but veins near costal and apical margins orange-red. Hindwings infuscated, veins light brown to reddish brown. Rostrum nearly reaching end of abdomen. Forewings with Sc+R fork within basal third; Ms1 branched just distad of its middle. In holotype left forewing (but not right forewing) with an abnormal supernumerous subcostal cell ( Fig. 131f). Male genitalia with pygofer narrow. Genital styles broad, slightly tapering towards the end; proximal dorsal process short, pointed, curved inwards; distal dorsal process broad and long, slightly curved outwards at the tip; both processes well separated. Aedeagus broad; stem with two slender, dorsal processes just before apical part, the right one slightly longer; apical part spatulate, strongly curved to the left.

Etymology. The species name is a Latin adjective (corniger, -gera, -gerum = bearing horns).

Type material. Holotype ♂ (forewing 4.2 mm, body 2.1 mm), WEST MALAYSIA; labels: 1) MALAYA: Pahang / Cameron Highlands / Mt. Brinchang / 1–9.I.1959 2) 1900–2000m 3) L.W. Quate / Collector ( BPBM).

Distribution. West Malaysia.

Diagnosis. Alara cornigera resembles A. cervus Zelazny from the Philippines in structure and coloration. It can be distinguished by its larger size, by the separated dorsal processes of the genital styles, and by the aedeagus having smaller dorsal processes on the stem and a more curved apical portion.
