Onthophagus mimikanus Balthasar, 1969 View in CoL

( Figs. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 8 , 4044)

Type material. Holotype female (NMPC), from [ Indonesia: WNG: region:] Mimika, 1956.

Diagnosis and comment. Clypeal border of this species evenly rounded or slightly truncate, with a nonreflexed margin; surface behind margin abundantly, finely punctate, lacking any protrusions. Frons and pronotum without any further elevations. Pronotum very shiny, sparsely micropunctate; elytral interstriae convex, shiny, virtually devoid of punctation. Puncture impressions of elytral striae enlarged on posterior half. Eye foramina large, closed behind, i.e., very narrow posterior end of gena just reaching occipital side; interocular distance approximately 2 eye widths. Genal border rounded. Metasternal ventrites with row of coarse ocellate punctures along base. Pygidium simply punctate. Generally black, shiny. Relatively plump, body length approximately 6 mm.

The unique holotype is a female, not a male, as suggested by the author. Onthophagus aceroides , coming from the same region, is quite different and most unlikely to be the male. Other males, also singletons, equally cannot be allocated to this species with certainty.
