Aulacoderus hamatus nom. nov.

Anthicus (Aulacoderus) ruficeps Hille, 1984: 32 (not Anthicus ruficeps Pic, 1913a: 146 )

Notes

Pic (1913a) described Anthicus ruficeps from "Transcaspienne" [= Transcaspia], and is still placed in Anthicus ( Winkler 1927: 843) . Hille (1984) later proposed the homonym Anthicus (Aulacoderus) ruficeps from South Africa, which is known only on the basis of the description. The replacement name Aulacoderus hamatus nom. nov. is here created for the African species. The new name is based on the Latin for "having a hook" ( hamatus ) and refers to the chitinized structures of the internal sac of the aedeagus of this species.

Notes

Anthicus (Aulacoderus) sulcithorax var. nigrithorax from "Jéricho" and " Liban " ( Pic 1897a: 27) was inadvertently synonymized with the nominal subspecies by Winkler (1927), who treated it as an infrasubspecific entity (cf. Nardi & Mifsud 2003). This synonymy is confirmed by the study of the lectotype (here designated). A single label (" v. nigrithorax Pic " [h]), pinned separately on the bottom of the box, is found underneath the above-mentioned two specimens and two others. These latter specimens, on the basis on the their locality of collection, surely do not belong to the type series and are for this reason ignored.

Anthicus (Aulacoderus) sulcithorax var. pallidior from "Jéricho" ( Pic 1941: 5) was automatically placed (Article 45.6.4) as a subspecies by Nardi & Mifsud (2003). The study of the lectotype (here designated) allowed the establishment of the above new synonymy. A single label, " v. pallidior Pic " [h], pinned separately to the bottom of the box, is found underneath the lectotype and two other specimens from the same locality. It is unclear whether these latter specimens belong or not to the type series; they are in poor condition, and bear only labels with the collection locality, and were for these reasons ignored.

Both lectotypes fall within the range of variation exhibited by the nominate subspecies (see Nardi & Mifsud 2003: 104).

The homonym Anthicus robustissimus var. pallidior Pic, 1948 from South Africa is a synonym of Aulacoderus rotundipennis (Pic, 1895) ( Hille 1984) , so no nomenclatural action is necessary.

The distribution of Aulacoderus sulcithorax was summarized by Nardi & Mifsud (2003); Uhmann et al. (2005) recorded this species also from Ethiopia on the basis of material kept in SMNS. However, this record was found to be based on two specimens belonging to an unidentified species of Clavicollis Marseul, 1879 .

Nardi & Mifsud (2003) suggest that the records of Aulacoderus friwaldszkyi (LaFerté-Sénectère, 1849) from Israel are probably based on misidentified specimens of A. sulcithorax sulcithorax . This opinion, ignored by Uhmann et al. (2005), is supported by the above specimen ( TAU) attributed to A. friwaldszkyi by Uhmann et al. (2005: 46, as A. friwaldszkyi (La Ferté-Sénectère, 1847 [sic!]).

Cordicollis gracilior (Abeille de Perrin, 1885)

Nardi det. 2005" [h+p], 1 Ψ [syntype of auliatanus?] ( MNHN, M. Pic coll.).

Notes

Species closely related to Cordicollis gracilis (Panzer, 1796) and C. gracilior have been confused for a long time ( Méquignon 1939; Bonadona 1953, in both cases as Anthicus ) and are in need of a revision. Anthicus gracilior var. auliatanus from "Turkestan" ( Pic 1940: 1) was informally synonymized with Cordicollis gracilior by Bonadona (1953, as Anthicus gracilior ab. auliatanus). Later, the same author ( Bonadona 1989, 1991, in both cases as Cordicomus ) listed it as a synonym of Cordicollis gracilior without further comments. This synonymy is confirmed by the study of the lectotype (here designated).

The above-mentioned three specimens are glued in the same way and on the same type of card. The second specimen was next to the lectotype, whereas the third was amongst specimens identified as [ Cordicollis ] gracilis .

The type locality of the variety auliatanus is "Turkestan" (without further details) but, according to its name, it must be identified with Aulie-Ata, currently Taraz, in the southern Asiatic part of Kazakhstan (Zhambyl province). The records of Cordicollis gracilior for "Turkestan" ( Bucciarelli 1980: 130, as Cordicomus gracilior ) and for "terrains salés du Turkestan" ( Bonadona 1989: 71, 1991: 97) very probably refer to the type locality of this variety.

Cordicollis subinstabilis ( Pic, 1933)

Anthicus subinstabilis Pic, 1933: 6

Anthicus subinstabilis var. Karikalensis Pic, 1933: 7 [unavailable name] Anthicus subinstabilis var. Nathani Pic, 1933: 7 [unavailable name] Anthicus subinstabilis var. subindicus Pic, 1933: 7 [unavailable name] Anthicus subinstabilis var. subsabuleti Pic, 1933: 7 [unavailable name] Notes

This species and its above-cited varieties were described from " Karikal " (southern India, Pondichéry). These varieties are known only from the original descriptions. Telnov (2007c) placed them in synonymy with Cordicollis subinstabilis ( Pic, 1933) ; however, these names are unavailable (Articles 45.6.1, 45.6.4 and 45.6.4.1), as in the same paper there is the description of a new subspecies ( Pic 1933: 11).

As stated by Telnov (2006), Anthicus subinstabilis ab. lateobscuripennis Pic, 1938: 15 from southern India is also an unavailable name.

Bonadona (1986: 68, as Cordicomus subinstabilis ) erroneously attributed the description of this species to Pic (1938). Pic (1938) wrote " Anthicus subinstabilis mihi. Cette espèce, originaire des Indes Mér., ressemble à semiopacus Reitt. [= Cyclodinus semiopacus (Reitter, 1887) ]", and provided a description which is essentially the same as in Pic (1933) where, however, he compared A. subinstabilis to " instabilis Sch. [= Cordicollis instabilis ( Schmidt, 1842) ]". Pic (1938) clearly indicated the new species described as "n. sp.", so his sole above-mentioned use of "mihi" must be read as " Pic, 1933: 6".

Cordicollis subinstabilis is known from the type locality ( Pic 1933), southern India (without further data) ( Pic 1938) and Sri Lanka ( Bonadona 1986).

Cyclodinus blandulus blandulus (Baudi di Selve, 1877)

Material examined

Italy: Campania reg., Naples env., sd, Anguis. [= A. Anguissola leg.], 1 ɗ ( MCZR, P. Luigioni coll.).

Notes

A Turano-Mediterranean species (cf. Nardi & Mifsud 2003) that is generally rare and localized, and was only recently recorded from mainland Italy ( Degiovanni & Pezzi 2007). The new record is the northernmost for mainland Italy. This specimen was collected at the beginning of the twentieth-century. The Naples environs are currently highly developed by humans (cf. Nardi & Vomero 2007), so this species is probably extinct for this area. Luigioni (1929, as Anthicus (Cyclodinus) minutus a. blandulus ) only reported this species from Sicily, despite correctly identifying the above specimen in his collection.

Notes

Buck (1965) described Anthicus basilewskyi from eleven specimens from "Tanganyika, Ngorongoro Crater, 1,900 m ". Also described was Anthicus casloni , based on ten specimens, holotype included, from the same locality, plus one specimen from "Tanganyika, [...] on the summit of Kidunda," and another from "Tanganyika, Katesh [...]". Bonadona (1979: 641, 643) attributed these last two paratypes to two new species: Omonadus decellei and Formicomus penitus . Moreover, Bonadona (1979: 639–640) proposed a new combination and a new rank for Buck's species: Cyclodinus basilewskyi basilewskyi and C. basilewskyi casloni .

As already stated by Bonadona (1979), there are no aedeagal differences between Buck's two taxa. The study of the above-cited types allowed the establishment of the new synonymy given above. The priority is given to Cyclodinus casloni because Anthicus basilewskyi Buck , as previously stated by Uhmann (1989), is a junior primary homonym of Anthicus Basilewskyi Pic, 1955 from Rwanda (see below). The paper of Bonadona (1979) was overlooked by Telnov (2006), who proposed Cyclodinus bucki as a new replacement name for Anthicus basilewskyi Buck , so this name is here also placed in synonymy.

The habitus of Anthicus basilewskyi and A. casloni illustrated by Buck (1965) are rather different. The habitus of the examined specimens corresponds substantially to the illustration of A. basilewskyi ( Buck 1965: 277, fig. 18), while that of A. casloni ( Buck 1965: 282, fig. 21) seems inaccurately drawn. However, no student has so far examined the four paratypes of A. basilewskyi and the five of A. casloni which are not kept in the MRAC (see Buck 1955: 261, 278, 282).

A paratype of Anthicus basilewskyi Buck was parasitized by an unidentified Laboulbeniales (Ascomycetes).

Cyclodinus casloni is recorded only from Tanzania ( Buck 1965; Uhmann 1989, as C. basilewskyi ), Uganda ( Hemp et al. 1999, as C. basilewskyi ) and Mauritius ( Uhmann 1990c, as C. basilewskyi ), but this record needs checking as it may refer to the closely related C. obconiceps ( Pic, 1902) from Madagascar (cf. Bonadona 1958, 1979).

Notes

This Afrotropical-Mediterranean species (cf. Nardi & Mifsud 2003) was recently recorded from mainland Italy ( Nardi 2004c) without further details, on the basis of the above specimens. They are here recorded with all their collection data as this species is very localized in the Mediterranean area and is generally collected as single specimens (cf. Nardi & Mifsud 2003). Its occurrence in mainland Italy, Liguria region, was recently documented by Degiovanni & Pezzi (2007).

Cyclodinus debilis (LaFerté-Sénectère, 1849)

Material examined

Spain: Canary Islands, Tenerife, El Medano, 12.III.1985, E. Colonnelli leg., 1 ɗ ( MZUR).

Notes

This is the first record for the Canary Islands. This Saharo-Turano-Sindian species was previously known in Europe only from Caucasia, Malta, and Pantelleria Island (Sicily) (cf. Nardi & Mifsud 2003; Nardi 2004c).

The identification was confirmed by the examination of the aedeagus (cf. Schatzmayr & Koch 1934, fig. 3, as Anthicus debilis ; Bucciarelli 1980, figs 165–166).

Cyclodinus dimidiatus (Wollaston, 1864) , recorded only from the Canary and Cape Verde Islands (cf. Nardi & Mifsud 2003; Nardi 2004c), is closely related to C. debilis (cf. Marseul 1879, as Anthicus debilis ; Pic 1893b, as A. (Cyclodinus) debilis ). This species is unknown to the author and its aedeagus was never described; however, the occurrence of C. debilis on the Canary Islands suggests that C. dimidiatus could be a synonym of the former species, a hypothesis that can be confirmed through study of Wollaston’s types.

Cyclodinus drurei ( Pic, 1901) comb. nov.

Anthicus Drurei Pic, 1901: 37 View in CoL

Material examined

Iraq: "Bagdad" [h], "A. Drurei / Pic" [h], "Krekich/ vidit" [h], 1 ex ( MNHN, M. Pic coll.); "Bagdad" [h], "co-type" [p], "A. Drurei / Pic" [h], "Koch/ vidit" [h], 1 ex ( MNHN, M. Pic coll.); "Bagdad" [h], " Drurei Pic " [h], 3 ex [all glued on the same label] ( MNHN, M. Pic coll.).

Notes

The above-cited specimens are syntypes: a single label, " Drurei Pic " [h], pinned separately to the bottom of the box, is found beneath them. This species from "Bagdad" ( Pic 1901: 37) was later listed only by two authors ( Pic 1911: 44; Winkler 1927: 850, both as A. Drurei ) from Mesopotamia (without further details). Pic (1901) compared it to Anthicus ustulatus LaFerté-Sénectère, 1849 , which was moved to Cyclodinus Mulsant & Rey, 1866 (cf. Pic 1893b, as Anthicus (Cyclodinus) ustulatus ; Winkler 1927, as A. (C.) ustulatus ; Bucciarelli 1980). Based on examination of the syntypes, this species is also transferred to Cyclodinus . However, the author is not familiar with all Asian Cyclodinus species, and so cannot comment on its validity.

Notes

" Endomia occipitalis = punctatus Laf. var. nov . quadrinotatus " from " Italie [= Italy]" ( Pic 1913b: 161) was treated as an infrasubspecific entity by different authors ( Winkler 1927; Pic 1934a; Bucciarelli 1958; Bonadona 1960). Bonadona (1976, 1991) listed it, without further comments, as a synonym of E. occipitalis , whereas Uhmann (1992) treated it as a variety. The synonymy is confirmed by the study of the above syntype.

First records for the Greek regions of Pindo and Eubea; only few detailed records from Greece and Bosnia Herzegovina existed so far ( Bucciarelli 1976; Uhmann 1985; Telnov 1998c).

The general distribution of this species is Mediterranean (cf. Nardi 2004c; Uhmann et al. 2005); records for Sudan ( Pic 1907: 322, as " Ochthenomus occipitalis Duf. (punctatus Laf.) varieté") and Cape Verde Islands ( Lundblad 1958) were later overlooked (cf. Pic 1911; Bonadona 1960; Geisthardt 1988; Nardi 2004c; Uhmann et al. 2005). A general record for the Canary Islands by Pic (1911) was repeated by other authors ( Winkler 1927; Koch 1935; Lundblad 1958; Bonadona 1960, 1976; Bucciarelli 1980; Bonadona 1991; Uhmann 1992); Machado & Oromí (2000: 241) excluded this species from the Canarian fauna, but they incorrectly attributed the record to Winkler (1927). Nardi (2004c) listed its presence as doubtful for these islands.

Notes

It is unclear whether the old records of this Afrotropical-Mediterranean species (cf. Nardi & Mifsud 2003) for "Caucasus, Armen. Geb" ( Uhmann 1985, as E. tenuicollis ) and Syria (cf. LaFerté-Sénectère 1849b, as Ochthenomus angustatus LaFerté-Sénectère ; Marseul 1879, as O. tenuicollis ; Pic 1911; Sahlberg 1913; Horion 1956; Uhmann et al. 2005, in all cases as E. tenuicollis ) refer to the current Armenian and Syrian territories or not, so it is here definitively recorded from these two countries as well as from Macedonia (cf. Nardi 2004c; Uhmann et al. 2005). This species was known from Ukraine only on the basis of very old ( Truqui 1855, 368, as Ochthenomus angustatus , "Taurica [= Crimea]"; Baudi di Selve 1878: 20, as O. tenuicollis , "Tauria" [= Crimea]) or general records (cf. Medvedev 1965, as E. tenuicollis ; Nardi 2004c; Uhmann et al. 2005), the same being true also for Azerbaijan ( Reitter et al. 1886, as O. tenuicollis ; Uhmann 1985; Uhmann et al. 2005). Its presence in Yugoslavia ( Uhmann 1985), overlooked by Uhmann et al. (2005), is confirmed also by the above-mentioned specimen. Kejval (1998: 108) cited this species from "central Asia", based on specimens collected "near Ashkhabad" in Turkmenistan (Z. Kejval, pers. comm.); this is the first record for this country.

Notes

The homomyms of Anthicus unifasciatus Bonelli were discussed by Nardi (2004a, 2004b), who also gave a new replacement name for Endomia maculata Pic, 1931 .

Endomia unifasciata var. maculata Pic, 1919 a from " France: Cannes et Lyon" ( Pic 1919a: 11) was synonymized with E. unifasciata ssp. unifasciata (cf. Nardi 2004a). This synonymy is confirmed by the study of the lectotype and the paralectotype (here designated). A single label, pinned separately to the bottom of the box, is found underneath these specimens: " v. maculatus Pic " [h].

Endomia unifasciata a. insularis from "Sicilia" [= Sicily] ( Pic 1934a: 33) is an unavailable name (cf. Nardi 2004a), and the study of its " type " confirmed that it belongs to E. unifasciata ssp. unifasciata .

The above-mentioned records are the first for the Dodecanese ( Greece) and Oman (cf. Nardi 2004c; Uhmann et al. 2005, as E. unifasciata ), whereas only a few specific records were available from Azerbaijan ( Reitter et al. 1886, as Ochthenomus unifasciatus ; Uhmann 1985). It is unclear whether the old records for "Caucasus, Armen. Geb" and "Caucasus, Araxesthal" ( Uhmann 1985, as E. unifasciata ) refer to the current Armenian territory or to nearby countries, so this species is here definitively recorded for Armenia.

Uhmann et al. (2005) overlooked an old general record for Syria (Baudi di Selve 1877, as Ochthenomus unifasciatus ).

Leptaleus barbieri Pic, 1952

Leptaleus Barbieri Pic, 1952a: 12

Notes

Pic (1952a) described this species from Saigon ( Vietnam). It was later recorded only by Uhmann (1989: 383), who indicated by a "?" that he was unaware of the citation for the original description. Telnov (2006: 67), referring to Uhmann (1989), incorrectly declared Leptaleus barbieri as a nomen nudum.

Macratria severini var. diversimembris Pic, 1955

Macratria Severini View in CoL var. diversimembris Pic, 1955: 126 [unavailable name]

Notes

Macratria Severini View in CoL var. diversimembris Pic from Rwanda was described together with a new subspecies ( Notoxus basilewskyi ssp. ruhegeriensis Pic, 1955: 129) so the content of the work unambiguously reveals that the name was proposed for an infrasubspecific entity, and consequently this name is unavailable (Articles 45.6.1, 45.6.4 and 45.6.4.1). Telnov (2006: 66) overlooked this situation, and by comparision of the holotypes of Macratria severini Pic, 1900 and M. severini var. diversimembris declared them both to be valid species; however, M. diversimembris is unavailable. A valid name must be proposed for M. diversimembris , but the African Macratria Newman, 1838 View in CoL are in need of a taxonomic revision and it is preferable to delay this action.
