scientific name

Paraegidium pokornyi Frolov, Akhmetova
status

Paraegidium pokornyi Frolov, Akhmetova & Vaz-de-Mello, sp. nov.

( Figures 4 View Figure 4 (a–g), 7)

Type locality

Brazil, Mato Grosso, Barra do Garças, Serra Azul State Park.

Type material examined

Holotype, male at CEMT labelled ‘ BRASIL: Mato Grosso. Barra do Garças. Serra Azul. XII- 2012. light Benec & Pokorny’ . Paratypes: BRAZIL. Mato Grosso: seven males and four females at CEMT, EPGC, SPC and ZIN with the same data as the holotype .

Diagnosis

P. pokornyi sp. nov. is most similar to P. costalimai but can be separated from it by having shorter and widely rounded lobes of anterior frontoclypeal process ( Figure 4 View Figure 4 (a)) and smaller group of spinules in endophallus ( Figure 4 View Figure 4 (g)).

Description

Holotype, male ( Figure 4 View Figure 4 (a)).

Body length 6.8 mm. Colour uniformly dark brown.

Anterior frontoclypeal process relatively short, narrower than head, widely sinuate medially, with symmetric, rounded lateral lobes.

Pronotum slightly narrower than elytra, deeply excavated in middle. Lateral pronotal processes depressed, somewhat ridge-shaped, their hind margins with carinae not reaching base of pronotum. Pronotum coarsely punctate to rugose except for very apices of lateral pronotal processes and anterior margin.

Aedeagus with parameres relatively long: ratio phallobase width/paramere width 2.1 ( Figure 4 View Figure 4 (e)). Endophallus with a group of spinules ( Figure 4 View Figure 4 (g)). Apices of parameres acute in lateral view and narrow in dorsal view ( Figure 4 View Figure 4 (f)).

Female differs from male in having a distinct protibial spur, relatively smaller pronotum without processes and excavations, and in the absence of the frontoclypeal process ( Figure 4 View Figure 4 (b)).

Variation

Body length of the paratypes varies from 6.0 to 7.0 mm (males) and from 6.0 to 6.2 mm (females). Some paratypes have less developed anterior frontoclypeal and pronotal processes ( Figure 4 View Figure 4 (c–d)) than the holotype.

Distribution

The species is known from one locality in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, in the border with Goiás ( Figure 7 View Figure 7 ).

Etymology

The species is named after one of the collectors of the type series, Svatopluk Pokorny , scarabaeoidologist from Prague, Czech Republic .
