Diagnosis. Scatellini are distinguished from other tribes of the subfamily Ephydrinae by the following combination of characters:
Head: Medial facial area and ventral facial margin setose, the latter often with long setae; facial series of setae convergent medially toward dorsum; subcranial cavity large and cavernous.
Thorax: Two pairs of postsutural dorsocentral setae present, both pairs equally strong; disc of proepisternum usually bare, sometimes with a few fine setulae.
