Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 A–H.
Pediacus ater Grouvelle, 1897: 396 View in CoL .
Diagnosis. Recognisable by the combination of the following characters: body form broad, surface highly glossy, pronotum strongly explanate with glabrous lateral margins, elytra with epipleura strongly explanate.
Description. Body length 3.1–4.7 mm (n=9), broad, 2.55× longer than wide; colour variable, ranging from black-brown to orange-brown, disc of pronotum occasionally darker, with head, antennae, lateral margins of pronotum and legs paler; pubescence short, pale, appressed and inconspicuous; surface highly glossy. Head strongly transverse, 1.86× wider than long; puncturation moderately impressed, broad and sparse medially, increasing in size and density laterally with punctures separated by distinctly less than their diameter; setae very short and appressed, inconspicuous; microsculpture absent, surface glossy; eyes large, very strongly projecting, ocular index 0.69, finely faceted, postocular denticle absent; antennae as in Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 E, F, antennomere VII larger than VI and VIII. Pronotum strongly transverse, 1.40× wider than long, widest at about midpoint, sides broadly curved; lateral margins strongly explanate, denticles ranging from broadly rounded to narrowly obtuse, anterior denticle almost obsolete in some specimens; disc planar to faintly impressed; puncturation as for head, with a narrow, impunctate median strip most prominent basally; setation and microsculpture as for head, lateral margins glabrous. Elytra broadly elongate, 1.70× longer than wide, sides subparallel; epipleura strongly explanate, reflexed; puncturation moderately dense, moderately impressed basally, becoming weakly impressed laterally and posteriorly; setation short and inconspicuous; microsculpture absent, surface glossy. Genitalia for male as in Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 G, H, parameres elongate, tapering apically; internal sac with strong tooth-like projections basally and a sclerotized apical section.
Type material. Syntype from Sumatra, Si-Rambe, E. Modigliani ( MNHN) was examined and photographed in 1997 by AS.
