Subfamily Paratanaidinae Lang, 1949 View in CoL
Larsen & Heard (2001): 3.
Diagnosis [expanded from Larsen & Heard op. cit.): Females: with pleon epimera with or without pappose setae. Antennule and antenna setae smooth [not serrulate/setulate]; antenna article-2 inferior margin with at most a thorn-
like apophysis. Epistome not well-developed. Cheliped merus inferior margin as long as or longer than that of carpus; propodus medial comb of relatively few, short spines. Pereopods 2–3 carpus with three distal spines. Males highly dimorphic.
Composition ( NZ genera in bold): Acallocheirus gen. nov., Aparatanais gen. nov., Atemtanais Bird, 2011 ; Paratanais Dana, 1852 ; Penteparatanais gen. nov.; Triparatanais Bamber & Chatterjee, 2010 ; Xeplenois Bamber, 2005 .
Possible inclusion: Metatanais Shiino, 1952 (unpublished record from Kermadec Islands: G. Bird).
Remarks. The subfamily Paratanaidinae is generally considered a well-defined taxon, supported by phylogenetic analyses ( Larsen & Wilson 2002; Błażewicz-Paszkowycz & Poore 2008) but the Paratanaidae still has some outstanding issues to be resolved ( Bird & Larsen 2009), especially its relationships to apparent sister taxa such as the Nototanaidae Sieg, 1976 and Typhlotanaidae Sieg, 1984 and the composition of the subfamily Bathytanaidinae Larsen & Heard, 2001 . Pending an ongoing analysis of conflicting genera in the Paratanaidinae / Bathytanaidinae (Błażewicz-Paszkowycz & Bamber, in press), Pseudobathytanais (specifically P. shtockmani ) is here discussed as if it were a member of the Paratanaidinae . In the Bird & Larsen phylogeny Pseudobathytanais was effectively a paratanaidin-bathytanaidin chimaera and hence disruptive to the subfamilial pattern. Similarly, the possible linkage of Metatanais to the Paratanaidae by Bird & Larsen (op. cit.) is maintained here although it remains strictly incertae cedis.
