Valid name: Hipposideros caffer (Sundevall, 1846)
Holotype: ZMB 364 View Materials , skin and skull and ZMB 85624 (old number = An 16311), skeleton, male; Tete, Mozambique; collected by W.C.H. Peters, between 1843 and 1847.
Comment: To verify the valid use of the name Hipposideros caffer for P. gracilis Peters, 1852 , we remeasured ZMB 364: forearm length = 43mm, C-M 3 = 6.1mm, Condylo-canine-length = 15.3mm, max. skull length = 17.8mm.
