Valid name: Cynopterus sphinx Vahl, 1797

Referred specimen (marked with type *): ZMB 2492 , body in alcohol, skull extracted, female, adult; Nicobar Islands, India; collector unknown; purchased from Pareiss .

Comment: Andersen (1912: 628) mentioned several “cotypes” (from Car Nicobar) presumably preserved at NMW. These specimens had been collected by Zelebor & Frauenfeld at the Car Nicobar Island . Since ZMB 2492 was purchased from Pareiss, unless it can be proven that part of the Novara collection brought back to Vienna was sold to cover expenses, it seems unlikely that ZMB 2492 is a type specimen. Pachysoma scherzeri (Fitzinger, 1861) is a nomen nudum, lacking any description. The year of publication of “Reise der österreichischen Fregatte Novara …” is 1868 .
