Genus Syrraphesina Raffray, 1903 View in CoL
Syrraphesina Raffray, 1903: 100 View in CoL .
Type species: Syrraphesina pliciventris Raffray, 1903: 100 (original monotypy).
Revised diagnosis. Small clavigerite beetles with body size less than 2.0 mm. Body strongly convex dorso-ventrally; head and pronotum much narrower than elytra and abdomen, such that the general habitus appears to be subtriangular. Head elongate, dorso-ventrally cylindrical, with punctiform vertexal foveae close to midline; gular region broadly and moderately impressed, posterior tentorial pits (gular foveae) small and close. Antennae short, each composed of five antennomeres; antennal fossae entirely and scapes largely covered beneath rostrum; scapes and pedicels short, antennomeres 3 to 5 confluent, these three antennomeres as a whole pedunculate at base and thickened apically, with truncate apex filled with dense, long setae. Pronotum pentagonal, broadest at base, lacking foveae or median sulcus. Prosternum strongly raised medially, with small lateral procoxal foveae. Elytra broadly triangular; anterior margin carinate; lacking basal foveae, sutural striae complete, lacking discal striae; posterolateral corners rounded; posterior margin slightly curved or sinuate, lacking trichomes. Mesoventrite transverse, confluent with metaventrite, the latter strongly convex at middle and evenly sloping laterally. Legs short, tibiae narrow at bases and thickened distally. Abdomen in dorsal view strongly transverse, posterior margin truncate. Composite tergite deeply concave medially, with pair of small lateral trichomes at base; with three pairs of paratergites, first pair of paratergites each bearing two groups of well-developed trichomes. Sternite 2 (IV) approximately twice as long as sternite 1 (III) along midline, sternites 2–4 (IV–VI) strongly expanded laterally and forming distinct lobes, so that they can be clearly seen in dorsal view. Median lobe of aedeagus clearly divided into subequal apical and basal parts. Sexual dimorphism indistinct; males have body size much smaller than females; legs lacking spines for both sexes.
Distribution. There are two species distributed in Papua New Guinea (Morobe) and Indonesia (Lombok Island). An additional undescribed species from Papua New Guinea has been seen from the MHNG collection.
