14. Consolea spp .

Notes:— We only saw Consolea growing as a garden ornamental on Grenada. The plants had spineless pads and proliferating and spineless flower and fruit cladodes. We identified this as Consolea rubescens Lemaire (1862: 174) because the name is commonly applied to this spineless species, which is native to the northern Lesser Antilles. There is an interesting specimen at K (barcode K000100705) collected in 1896 by Waby, which has large spiny pads. The specimen is annotated as Opuntia rubescens but is probably a different Consolea species in cultivation in Barbados. It is unlikely to be native there as neither Hughes (1750) nor Maycock (1830) mention such a plant.
