44. Theognete gaia Anderson , new species ( Figures 158 , 193 , 228 )

Diagnosis. Size. Length, male, 3.26–3.34mm; female, 2.92mm. Width, male, 1.85mm; female, 1.57mm. As for T. confusa but scales on pronotum less dense, more concentrated in anterior half and with scales of elytral intervals sparse, not overlapping. Aedeagus as in Fig. 193 .

Geographical distribution. México (Veracruz).

Natural history. Collected from berlese extraction of leaf and log litter at an elevation of 975m.

Derivation of specific name. Noun in apposition; from the Greek gaia , the Earth.

Material examined. 2♂, 1♀ ( CWOB, MCZC). Holotype ♂ ( MCZC): MÉXICO. Veracruz. Canyon Rio Metlac, near Fortín , 3200ft, 28.VII.–1. VIII.1973 / leaf & log litter / A. Newton collector / HOLOTYPE ♂, Theognete gaia sp. nov., R.S. Anderson. Aedeagus extracted. Paratype: MÉXICO. Veracruz. Canyon Rio Metlac (near Fortín), 3200', 28.VII.–1.VIII.1973, A. Newton, leaf and log litter (1♀ MCZC; 1♂ CMNC) .

Chorological relationships. Sympatric with T. thibodeaui .
