17. Theognete akros Anderson , new species ( Figures 74 , 79 , 84 )

Diagnosis. Size. Length, male, 3.48–3.74mm; female, 3.40–4.05mm. Width, male, 1.71–1.91mm; female, 1.69–2.08mm. As for T. semistriata except elytra with sutural stria shallowly punctate and linearly impressed; stria 2 not punctate or impressed. Aedeagus as in Fig. 79 .

Geographical distribution. México (Oaxaca).

Natural history. Collected from berlese extraction of wet riparian alder forest and oak-alder-pine forest leaf litter at an elevation of approximately 2150m. The elevation of 8000' (2440m) recorded for the specimens collected on 3.VI.1973 appears to be in error and should be approximately 7050' (2150m).

Derivation of specific name. Named from the Greek akros , meaning topmost, outermost or highest, in reference to the position of the type locality, which is situated immediately over the crest of the road beyond Suchixtepec heading down the Pacific slope.

Material examined. 6♂, 5♀♀ ( CMNC, ECOS). Holotype ♂ ( CMNC): MÉXICO: Oaxaca. 4.6km S Suchixtepec , 2150m, 23.VII.1992, 92-023, R.S. Anderson, wet ripar. alder for., leaf litter berlese / HOLO- TYPE ♂ , Theognete akros sp.nov., R.S. Anderson. Aedeagus extracted. Paratypes: MÉXICO. Oaxaca. Suchixtepec (4.6 km. S.), 2150m, 23.VII.1992, R. Anderson, wet riparian alder forest leaf litter berlese (2♂, 2♀♀ CMNC). Suchixtepec (5.1 km. S.), 2150m, 24.VII.1992, R. Anderson, oak/alder/pine forest leaf litter berlese (1♂, 1♀ CMNC). Suchixtepec (5.1 km. S.), 2150m, 25.VII.1992, R. Anderson, wet riparian alder forest leaf litter berlese (1♂ CMNC). Suchixtepec (3.5 mi. S.), 8000', 3.VI.1973, S. Peck, leaf litter, BER208 (1♂, 2♀♀ CMNC, ECOS) .

Chorological relationships. Not known to be sympatric with any other species of Theognete .
