3. Veronica crinita Kit. View in CoL ex. Schultes (1814: 26). ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 )

Stems (6) 10–40 (45) cm long, ascending to erect, tomentose to lanate, densely covered by eglandular hairs (0.2) 0.4–1.0 (1.9) mm long, ± patent, incurvate and antrorse or interwoven, not arranged in 2 opposite lines along the stem; apical shoot bearing 1–5 (10) pairs of leaves. Leaves (5.5) 13–35 (45) × (3) 4–25 (40) mm, the basal and medium ones similar, ovate to widely ovate, rarely widely deltate, lanceolate or elliptic, rounded, truncate or subcordate at the base, crenulate-dentate, usually very irregularly, sometimes revolute or subrevolute, the adaxial face usually sparsely covered by hairs, the abaxial face mostly tomentose or rarely more or less densely pilose, covered by fine and crooked hairs (0.1) 0.2–0.9 (1.2) mm long, sessile to shortly petiolate; apical shoot leaves opposite, narrowly elliptic to elliptic or lanceolate to ovate, crenulate-dentate, sometimes subrevolute. Racemes axillary, opposite, bearing (12) 20–85 (110) flowers, usually densely arranged; peduncles 1.5–11 cm long, indument similar to that of the stem, although usually shorter; bracts 2–7 (7.8) mm long, narrowly elliptic, narrowly oblong or linear, entire, glabrous, sometimes ciliate, rarely pilose; pedicels (0.7) 2.5–9 (9.3) mm long. Calyx (2) 3–4 (5.5) mm long, (4) 5 sepals, linear-lanceolate, sometimes subulate, longer or shorter than the capsule, usually glabrous, sometimes with a few sparse eglandular hairs restricted to the upper half. Corolla (8.5) 9–14 mm in diameter, light blue or blue-violet, pink or rarely white. Capsule (2) 2.5–4 (5) × (1.9) 2–3.5 (4.4) mm, usually longer than wide, elliptic, widely elliptic, suborbicular or obovate to very widely obovate, sometimes lobes slightly pointed at apex, rounded at the base, emarginate, sinus up to 0.8 mm depth, glabrous. Style (2) 3–5 (6) mm long. Seeds 0.7–1.8 × 0.5–1.7 mm, ca. 1–10 per capsule.

ROJAS-ANDRÉS & MARTÍNEZ-ORTEGA

Chromosome Number: —2 n = 16.

Habitat: —Dry and stony meadows, edges and glades of Quercus and Ostrya forests, usually on calcareous soils, although occasionally also on basalt, schistose soils, serpentines or trachytes; (140) 250–600 (2,200) m.

Distribution: —SE Europe; Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Republic of Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and European Turkey ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 ).

Phenology: —Flowering from (April) May to June (July).

Notes: —There are some populations of V. crinita occurring in the western part of the Balkan Peninsula, which are composed of individuals that are smaller in size than the typical plants identified as V. crinita . They have been recognized by some authors as a variety or a form (i.e., V. crinita f. bosniaca Fiala 1895: 619 , V. teucrium var. bosniaca (Fiala) K. Malý 1907: 229 , V. teucrium f. bosniaca (Fiala) Watzl 1910: 39 ). The inclusion of these populations within the variation of V. crinita according to the sources of information available to date has been discussed elsewhere ( Rojas-Andrés et al. 2015). AFLP markers are being used to determine the taxonomic identity and phylogenetic position of the infraspecific taxa described under V. crinita .
