17. Veronica turrilliana Stojanov & Stefanoff (1923: 220) View in CoL . ( Fig. 27 View FIGURE 27 )
Stems 8–20 cm long, ascending to erect, very branched, covered by short eglandular hairs 0.1–0.5 mm long, incurvate, ± appressed and antrorse, usually arranged in 2 opposite lines along the stem; apical shoot bearing 1–2 pairs of leaves. Leaves (3.5) 5–15 (19) × (1.5) 2.5–7 (8) mm; the basal ones usually suborbicular; the medium ones elliptic, obovate to widely obovate; cuneate or truncate at the base, usually crenate, sometimes subentire, subrevolute, subcoriaceous, non-revolute, glabrous or rarely with very short hairs along the margin (0.07) 0.08– 0.20 (0.32) mm long, sessile or shortly petiolate; apical shoot leaves opposite, narrowly elliptic to elliptic, crenate or entire, non-revolute. Racemes axillary, opposite, exceptionally solitary (i.e., one pair of leaves bearing one raceme), bearing (15) 20–40 (50) flowers, more or less densely arranged; peduncles 1–4 cm long, covered by short hairs, similar to those covering the stem; bracts 1.8–4.4 mm long, narrowly elliptic to elliptic, entire, glabrous; pedicels 1.4–5 mm long. Calyx (1.7) 2–3 (4) mm long, 5 sepals, narrowly elliptic to elliptic or lanceolate, sometimes narrowly oblong, shorter than the capsule, glabrous. Corolla (6.5) 8–14 mm in diameter, intense blue. Capsule (2) 2.5–4 (4.5) × (2) 3–4 (4.5) mm, longer than wide or wider than long, widely elliptic, suborbicular or oblate, rounded at the base, emarginate, sinus up to 0.9 mm depth, glabrous. Style 2.5–5 mm long. Seeds 1.1–1.7 × 1.2–1.8 mm, ca. 2–12 per capsule ( Kulpa 1968).
Chromosome Number: —2 n = 16.
Habitat: —Dry and stony pastures, stony places and dry hills on calcareous rocks, shrublands in Quercus forests; 0– 530 m.
Distribution: —Endemic to the Strandzha Planina: SE Bulgaria (Burgas province) and European Turkey (Kirklareli, Tekirdağ and Istanbul provinces) ( Fig. 28 View FIGURE 28 ).
Phenology: —Flowering from April to May.
