Comments:—The morphological similarity between Plinia sebastianopolitana and Plinia ilhensis was noted by Souza (2009) based on the asymmetrical, mostly elliptic leaf blade with a cuneate base and attenuate apex. The marginal vein is raised in both species, but sometimes this is not clearly seen because of a revolute margin in some specimens. However, Plinia sebastianopolitana and P. ilhensis can be distinguished by larger leaf blades to 14–16 cm long (vs. to 4–6 cm long) with hairs covering only the lower part (ovary and hypanthium) of the floral bud (vs. floral bud completely covered by hairs), respectively. Subsequent analysis including a broader sampling of specimens found no discontinuity in the boundary between these features. The type collection and protologue of Calyptranthes bimarginata indicate leaf morphology, shape, size and arrangement of flower and fruit, and geographic range, similar to Plinia ilhensis and P. sebastianopolitana . Following these observations, we here propose synonymization of Calyptranthes bimarginata and Plinia ilhensis under Plinia sebastianopolitana .
Eugenia sebastianopolitana can be recognized by sub-sessile flowers with completely fused calices and tomentose indumentum on the abaxial surface of the hypanthium and calyx.Although leaf size and shape vary greatly, the venation pattern is consistent with 11–14 pairs of secondary veins prominent on both surfaces and a marginal vein running 1.5 mm from the foliar margin. Eugenia sebastianopolitana is endemic to Rio de Janeiro state, occurring in the Atlantic forests and associated Restinga vegetation.
