Limnophora soror Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830: 520 .

Syntypes, sex and number not stated, lost; formerly in Dejean Collection, but now not in OUMNH or MNHNP.

Diagnosis. Arista pubescent; scutum with an “ Anthomyia -pattern”; presutural acrostichal setulae in 4–5 rows; dorsocentrals 2+3; lower katepisternal short, closer to posterior than to anterior seta; haltere yellow; fore tibia without a posterior seta; mid femur with 2 posterior preapical setae; mid tibia with 2 posterior setae; hind femur with a more or less complete row of long anteroventral setae (male) or with 3–5 anteroventral setae (female).

Notes. This species was described from Mauritius, but has not been recognised since the original description. Robineau-Desvoidy did not give the sex or number of his syntypes, stating only that the species was in the collection of Count Dejean. The syntypes are now lost, being in neither the OUMNH (remains of Dejean’s Diptera ) nor MNHNP (where Robineau-Desvoidy’s “exotic” species are located). We have seen 1 male and 2 females in MNHNP ( Réunion, Cilaos, i.1913) and 1 female in BMNH ( Mauritius, La Pouce, 10.vi.1971, A.M. Hutson) that agree with the brief original description and which we identify as this species, which cannot otherwise be assigned to any of the known Malagasy or mainland African species.
