J.B.C.Fusée-Aublet s.n. (BM!).

Polygala quinqueangularis Vellozo (1829: 292) , syn. nov. Lectotype (designated here): — BRAZIL. Rio de Janeiro (?). " Habitat campis apricis mediterraneis, " February 1783 –1790. Iconograph: Vellozo (1831: tab. 65).

Taxonomic notes:— Bennett (1874) placed P. quinqueangularis in synonymy with P. angulata De Candolle (1824: 328) (which is now considered a synonym of P. poaya Martius (1823: 285)) . However, it was described with winged stems, ternate leaves, congested racemes, and the flowers not conspicuously crested (the latter feature as my interpretation), all of which do not correspond to P. poaya . Based on its original description, I have linked this name with P. timoutou , instead of P. poaya . Nevertheless, P. timoutou does not occur in Rio de Janeiro ( Marques 1997), but it could have been collected in the State of São Paulo, also visited by Vellozo’s expedition (Damasceno 1977; Lima 1995).
