Lectotype (designated by Marques, 1984): — BRAZIL. Rio de Janeiro: Rio de Janeiro, Bairro de Santa Cruz, September 1783 –1790, "Habitat silvis maritimis Regii Praedii S. Crucis" (Vellozo 1829), 1783–1790. Iconograph: Vellozo (1831: tab. 59). Polygala bicolor Vellozo (1829: 290) nom. illeg., non Polygala bicolor Kunth (1821: 394) .
Taxonomic notes:— Polygala bicolor Vell. is the older name for this species. However, as it is a later homonym of P. bicolor Kunth , the name is illegitimate. Consequently, Bennett (1874) made a substitute name for this species, Acanthocladus albicans ( Marques 1984; Pastore et al. 2010).
