Taxonomic notes:— The geographic distribution and morphology of the plate for Polygala disperma View in CoL matches the species better known as Bredemeyera autranii View in CoL . Since Polygala disperma View in CoL is the older name for this species, a new combination is here proposed. This species is closely related to B. laurifolia View in CoL (Saint-Hilaire & Moquin- Tandon 1828: 56) Klotzsch ex Bennett (1874: 52) (which might include also B. velutina Bennett (1874: 53) View in CoL as a synonym). However, B. laurifolia View in CoL has pubescent leaves (more conspicuous on the abaxial surface) and occurs mostly in open savanna vegetation (Minas Gerais, Goiás, and Bahia), whereas B. disperma View in CoL occurs in the Atlantic Forest. Bredemeyera disperma View in CoL is also closely related to B. hebeclada ( De Candolle 1824: 341) J.F.B. Pastore (2010: 314) View in CoL (which undoubtedly includes B. kunthiana ( Saint-Hilaire & Moquin-Tandon 1828:56) Klotzsch ex Bennett (1874: 53) View in CoL as a synonym), but it can be distinguished by leaves even smaller than in B. hebeclada View in CoL .
