Taxonomic notes:— The geographic distribution and morphology of the plate for Polygala disperma matches the species better known as Bredemeyera autranii . Since Polygala disperma is the older name for this species, a new combination is here proposed. This species is closely related to B. laurifolia (Saint-Hilaire & Moquin- Tandon 1828: 56) Klotzsch ex Bennett (1874: 52) (which might include also B. velutina Bennett (1874: 53) as a synonym). However, B. laurifolia has pubescent leaves (more conspicuous on the abaxial surface) and occurs mostly in open savanna vegetation (Minas Gerais, Goiás, and Bahia), whereas B. disperma occurs in the Atlantic Forest. Bredemeyera disperma is also closely related to B. hebeclada ( De Candolle 1824: 341) J.F.B. Pastore (2010: 314) (which undoubtedly includes B. kunthiana ( Saint-Hilaire & Moquin-Tandon 1828:56) Klotzsch ex Bennett (1874: 53) as a synonym), but it can be distinguished by leaves even smaller than in B. hebeclada .
