Description. Holotype uniformly light brown. Others ranging from light brown to dark brown almost black. Antennal clubs grey.
Total length: 2.4–2.8 mm. Holotype measurements: total length 2.6 mm, elytral width 2.0 mm.
Male. Head. Surface very finely punctate, often appearing almost impunctate, basal carina absent. Clypeal edge normal, without projection lateral to teeth. Genal angle weakly defined. Dorsal part of the eyes narrow, separated by an interocular space approximately 20 times the eye width (40: 2); eye canthus nearly dividing eye. Head 1.3 x wider than long (48:36).
Prothorax: Pronotal surface with very fine punctation. Basal angles distinct. Punctures along the basal margin absent. Pronotum 1.8 x wider than long (41:23).
Elytra: Surface smooth with obsolete striae; intervals virtually impunctate. Striae 6 and 7 extending to elytral base. Elytra 1.1 x wider than long (51:45).
Legs: Protibiae usually with 3 teeth on outer edge, sometimes with only 2 teeth, front edge deeply angulate. Apical digit long and parallel sided with a rounded apex with a very small comb of stout setae, and bearing a short spur on the outer apical angle. Metatibiae with a notch on the inner edge.
Abdomen: Pygidium simple, entirely smooth, virtually impunctate and very slightly convex. Abdominal ventrites smooth, shiny and without reticulation. Ventrite 6 very finely punctate, almost impunctate.
Pterothorax: Medial lobe of metaventrite very finely punctate and very narrowly margined between the mesocoxae. Lateral lobe of metaventrite with inner border beside mesocoxae anteriorly curving to meet lateral border. Mesoventrite notched anteriorly. Mesoventrite smooth. Metanepisternum finely reticulate.
Aedeagus: Small tufts of setae projecting from apices of both right and left parameres, left paramere pointed.
Female. As per L. monteithi species group. Metatibiae without notch on inner edge.
Etymology. Named in honour of Chris Reid, at the Australian Museum, for his invaluable contribution to the systematics of Australian beetles including the dung beetle genera Temnoplectron and Coptodactyla .
Distribution. Known from the rainforests of the Wet Tropics bioregion from Mount Boolbun south to Tully Falls National Park ( Fig. 12B View FIGURE 12 ).
Comments. Lepanus reidi is known from almost 500 specimens, the majority of which have been collected in flight intercept traps or baited pitfall traps. This species appears to be a generalist and label data indicate this species has been collected in earthworm, cricket, or snail baited flight intercept traps, diurnally feeding on bird faeces, and from mushroom or dung baited pitfall traps (human or macropod faeces). Ebert et al. (2019) also collected L. reidi new species from a pitfall trap baited with vertebrate carrion. A small number of specimens have been collected in malaise and window traps.
This species has been referred to under the informal nomenclature sensu Yeates et al. (2011) as Lepanus NQ5 (Gunter et al. 2019). The specimen sequenced in this study was collected from the Mount Hypipamee National Park [formerly The Crater National Park] in the same trap as the holotype and is designated as a paratype here (ANIC 25- 060883 also as COL1152). It was recovered as sister to L. monteithi in a larger clade containing all species within the L. monteithi species group. Other specimens from Alexandra Range and Emmagen Creek have also been sequenced (25- 060882 and 25-057618). Lepanus reidi and L. monteithi are the only species in the group that have metatibiae with a notch on the inner edge and small tufts of setae on the apices of both parameres. Some specimens of L. reidi can be interpreted as having only 2 teeth on the protibiae, but can be separated from L. monteithi by the characters in the key.
