Diagnosis. Fore tibia yellow with brown base, fore tarsus pale yellow, mid and hind tarsi dark yellow, except mid basitarsus dark yellow with brown tip. Wing discal band light than distal band. Arm of genital fork arcuate; medial tubercle absent.

Description. Male. Body length 9.0 mm, wing length 6.0 mm.

Head mostly subshiny blackish with very thin gray pollinosity. Frontal vitta orange with anterior margin yellow, densely microsetulose, about 1/2 width of frons; lower orbital plate dull pollinose; ocellar triangle black; lunule reddish orange; face pale yellow, densely microsetulose; gena yellow, lightly pollinose; clypeus uniformly blackish, shiny. Setae and setulae on head black; postgena with 1 strong seta at lower margin. Antenna dark yellow; first flagellomere 1.7X as long as broad; pedicel with 1 ventral apical seta nearly half length of first flagellomere; arista nearly 3.6X length of first flagellomere, brown and bare. Proboscis brownish-yellow with brown apex, setulae brown. Palpus dark yellow, setulae black.

Thorax blackish-brown, with pale gray pollinosity. Scutellum slightly convex, angled dorsally. Setae on thorax black, setulae blackish; katepisternum with 4 strong setae.

Legs mostly yellow, except mid and hind coxae brown, apical 1/4 of fore femur, 1/5 of mid and hind femora black; fore tibia yellow with brown base, mid and hind tibiae dark yellow to brown, darker at base and apex; fore tarsus pale yellow, mid and hind tarsi dark yellow, except mid basitarsus dark yellow with brown tip.

Wing brown with distal and discal bands dark brown; distal band basal to middle of distal section of M1; discal band much light than distal band, along M1 and reached to R4+5, basal to middle of penultimate section of M1. Bmcu slightly distal to CuA2, A1+CuA2 twice as long as CuA2; distance between apex of R2+3 and R4+5 0.7 times as long as M1 beyond dm-cu ( Fig. 23 View FIGURE 23 C). Halter pale yellow with base dark yellow.

Abdomen mostly blackish-brown, lightly pollinose, tergites 2–5 pale yellow apically. Pleuron light gray. Epandrium dark brown. Genital fork blackish-brown, with blackish-brown to black setulae; arm arcuate; basal tubercle subquadrate, medial tubercle absent, apex not inflated ( Fig. 23 View FIGURE 23 D). Distiphallus terminating in curved filaments, not inflated apically. Pregonite expanded. Postgonite narrow and apically out-turned, without an acute bend ( Fig. 23 View FIGURE 23 GH).

Female. Unknown.

Type material. HOLOTYPE: VIETNAM, Thua Thien Hue Province, Phu Loc District, Bach Ma National Park, 1294 m, 3.v.2012, Xingyue Liu (♂, CAU).

Distribution. Oriental: Vietnam (Thua Thien Hue).

Remarks. Cothornobata vietnamensis is similar to C. bubengensis sp. nov., but differs as follows: fore tibia yellow with brown base; fore tarsus pale yellow; mid and hind tarsi mostly dark yellow, but mid basitarsus pale yellow; wing discal band paler than distal band; arm of genital fork arcuate, medial tubercle absent.

Etymology. The specific name refers to the type locality, Vietnam.
