Cephennodes (Cephennodes) bagmatianus View in CoL sp. n.

( Figs 32 View FIGURES 32 – 39 , 45–46, 64–65, 88)

Type material. Holotype: NEPAL (Sindhupalchowk District): ♂, one label: " NEPAL (Prov. Bagmati) / below Thare Pati / 3500 m, 12.IV.81 / Löbl & Smetana" [white, printed] ( MHNG). Paratypes (3 exx): 3 ♀♀, same data as for holotype ( MHNG, cPJ).

Diagnosis. BL ~ 1.5 mm; elytra short, EI only 1.0 3–1.07; body uniformly dark brown; antennae unmodified; protibiae in male only slightly modified, not curved, slightly thickened dorso-ventrally with spatulate setae on mesal surface; apical projection of median lobe in ventral view nearly parallel-sided, in lateral view weakly curved dorsally; each paramere with one apical and two subapical setae which are distant from apex and strongly thickened.

Description. Body of male ( Fig. 32 View FIGURES 32 – 39 ) uniformly dark brown, stout, with shallow constriction between pronotum and elytra, moderately convex, covered with light brown setae; BL 1.48 mm.

Head subtrapezoidal, HL 0.18 mm, HW 0.35 mm; vertex and frons confluent and weakly convex; supraantennal tubercles distinct but weakly elevated; eyes moderately large, strongly convex, coarsely faceted. Punctures on frons and vertex small and shallow but distinct, separated by spaces 0.5–1 × as wide as diameters of punctures; setae short, sparse, suberect. Antennae moderately long and relatively strongly thickened, AnL 0.75 mm; antennomeres relatively compactly assembled, pentamerous club distinctly delimited and about as long as half AnL, surface of five terminal antennomeres distinctly coarser than that of proximal portion of antenna; antennomere I about 1.5 × as long as broad; II slightly narrower and shorter than I, 1.8 × as long as broad; III slightly narrower and much shorter than II, about 1.1 × as long as broad, IV as broad as III but indistinctly shorter, about as long as broad, V about as broad as IV but indistinctly longer, about 1.1 × as long as broad, VI indistinctly broader and longer than V, about 1.1 × as long as broad, VII distinctly broader but slightly shorter than VI, distinctly transverse, VIII–X each gradually broader, longer and each distinctly transverse, XI indistinctly broader than X, about as long as IX–X together, nearly twice as long as broad.

Pronotum in dorsal view nearly semicircular, broadest near posterior third, PL 0.48 mm, PW 0.70 mm; pronotum strongly convex at middle and strongly flattened near each hind corner, flattened area relatively large; anterior margin in strictly dorsal view slightly convex; lateral margins not microserrate, strongly rounded in anterior half and weakly so in posterior third; hind pronotal corners indistinctly obtuse-angled; posterior margin shallowly bisinuate; lateral carinae narrow, fused with lateral margins; antebasal pits small and shallow, diffuse, each located distinctly closer to posterior than to lateral pronotal margin. Punctures on disc fine, inconspicuous; setae moderately long and dense, suberect.

Elytra stout, oval, broadest near anterior third, EL 0.83 mm, EW 0.78 mm, EI 1.06. Humeral calli distinct, elongate; subhumeral lines only equal to 0.3 EL, weakly marked, developed as rounded stepwise border between more convex humeral region and less convex adsutural area; basal pit on each elytron large and located in short, deep, nearly round basal impression; apices of elytra separately rounded. Punctures more distinct than those on pronotum and dense, but still only superficial and inconspicuous; setae similar to those on pronotum.

Hind wings vestigial.

Metaventrite with indistinct postmesocoxal impressions, median area covered with fine punctures.

Protibiae (Figs 45–46) slightly thickened dorso-ventrally and bearing a large patch of spatulate setae on mesal surface.

Abdomen, middle and hind legs unmodified.

Aedeagus ( Figs 64–65 View FIGURES 64 – 71 ) in ventral view with asymmetrical median lobe broadest in distal half, AeL 0.38 mm, median lobe in ventral view with broadly and shallowly emarginate distal margin; apical projection in ventral view elongate and with parallel lateral margins, in lateral view weakly curved dorsally, curved portion very short; each paramere with one apical and two subapical setae, all strongly thickened, subapical setae shifted proximally, far from apex.

Female. Very similar to male but with less thickened protibiae (although also bearing a patch of dense setae on mesal surface), wingless; BL 1.38–1.50 mm (mean 1.44 mm); HL 0.18–0.20 mm (mean 0.19 mm), HW 0.35 mm, AnL 0.65–0.70 mm (mean 0.68 mm); PL 0.45–0.50 mm (mean 0.47 mm), PW 0.68–0.73 mm (mean 0.70 mm); EL 0.75–0.80 mm (mean 0.78 mm), EW 0.73–0.78 mm (mean 0.75 mm), EI 1.03–1.07.

Distribution ( Fig. 88 View FIGURES 88 – 89 ). Central Nepal.

Etymology. Locotypical, after Bagmati Zone in Nepal.

Remarks. Among all known species of the C. excavatus group, C. bagmatianus can be easily identified by its broad, stout and uniformly dark brown body, weakly modified protibiae in males and aedeagal structures.
