borisi Buresch, 1912 View in CoL
“ Erebia ligea L. ab. Borisi ” ( Buresch 1912: 48). [ Bulgaria: Mount] Vitosha ( Buresch 1912: 48).
♂ ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 3–10 ) with labels: (1) printed with handwritten inscriptions [here italicised] (on white paper) “[right side] 1000 m. | Witoscha 6-VII | Dragalewtsi 903 | Dr.I.Buresch”; (2) printed (on red paper) “ SYNTYPE ♂ | Erebia ligea ab. borisi | Buresch, 1912 | label attachment | Abadjiev & Langourov 2020”; (3) printed (on white paper) “NMNHS- INV-T-01008”.
Patronym, named in honour of HM Boris III, King of Bulgaria. The original description appeared on page 48 in Bulgarian, with an abridged version in German on page 56. Bulgarian text (here translated) reads: “Especially characteristic is the specimen caught in Vitosha on 6.VII.[1]903. It is absolutely fresh well-formed (26 mm forewing length) female specimen, which at first sight clearly differs from any other by the absence of ocelli on the forewings, as a result well-defined connection on these wings remains empty. On the hindwings, however, the ocelli are normally developed, 4 in number.” Actually this particular specimen has been misidentified and it represents a male. A second specimen from Tscham-Koria [Rila Mountains: Borovets], also mentioned by Buresch (1912: 48, 56), is apparently lost. Infrasubspecific, not an available name, Article 10.2 ( ICZN 1999).
