REMARKS

The type locality is the Red Sea, and the collector “M. Roux” that is indicated on the label is likely J. L. F. P. Roux who collected material in the Mediterranean Sea and in the Near East ( Bauchot et al. 1990, 1997; see Appendix). Material brought from the Red Sea by Roux has 1835 as entry date in the CAA. Thus, these samples unambiguously belong to the type series, and a lectotype can be designated.

According to Ng et al. (2008: 216, 218), Grapsus granulosus was often regarded as a junior synonym of Grapsus albolineatus (e.g. Banerjee 1960: 147, 153-154; Davie 2002: 213), but Crosnier (1965: 15, pl. 2, fig. 1) and Holthuis (1977: 147, 148) commented that it is a distinct species (see also Vannini & Valmori 1981; Zaouali et al. 2007).
