TYPE LOCALITY: "Summit of Donner Pass, Placer Co., California, USA]."

DISTRIBUTION: Sierra Nevada of EC California and WC Nevada to N coast of California, and NC Oregon ( USA).

COMMENTS: Subgenus Neotamias . Elevated from a subspecies of townsendii by Sutton and Nadler (1974); distinction also suggested by Kain (1985), Sutton (1987), and Gannon and Lawlor (1989).
