Key to species of Orussidae View in CoL View at ENA from the eastern Palaearctic
Species from southern China are also included. Vilhelmsen et al. (2014) regarded O. mikagei Togashi, 2008 as a junior synonym of O. rufipes Tsuneki, 1963 . For a complete key to the world’s species of Orussus , see Vilhelmsen et al. (2014).
1. Frons with area delimited by lateral longitudinal frontal carinae and dorsal as well as ventral transverse frontal carinae ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 A). Combined length of antennomeres 4+5 longer than antennomere 6 ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 B). Mesoscutellum with lateral margin indistinct, not raised relative to adjacent sclerites, and posterior margin broadly parallel with anterior margin of metanotum. Vein 2r of fore wing arising from pterostigma about 0.6–0.7 from base of latter ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 C)....................... Ophrynopus ...2
- Frons without dorsal transverse frontal carina and longitudinal frontal carinae ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 B). Combined length of antennomeres 4+5 equal or shorter than antennomere 6 ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 B). Mesoscutellum with distinct lateral margins, raised relative to surrounding sclerites, posterior margin triangular or rounded, but not broadly parallel with anterior margin of metanotum. Vein 2r of fore wing arising from middle of pterostigma ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 F)................................................... Orussus …3
2. Apical half of forewing entirely infuscate, stigma of forewing dark brown ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 in Togashi 2000). Apical projection of abdominal sternum 9 in male clearly longer than broad (Fig. 10 in Togashi 2000). Japan (Honshu)............................................................................................ Ophrynopus apicalis ( Togashi, 2000)
- Apical 0.2 of forewing clear, stigma of forewing largely white ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 C). Apical projection of abdominal sternum 9 in male shorter than broad (Fig. 14 in Togashi 2000). South Korea, Japan (Shikoku, Honshu, Yakushima, Tanegashima)....................................................................... Ophrynopus tosensis (Tosawa & Suigihara, 1934)
3. Forewing entirely hyaline, without infuscated band. Mesopleuron with vertical carina anterolaterally (mesepisternal carina). China (Hainan), Japan (Ryukyu Islands).............................................. Orussus striatus Maa, 1950
- Forewing with at least one infuscate transverse band. Mesepisternal carina absent................................... 4
4. Abdominal tergite 2 with a large white spot anterolaterally on each side. Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku)....................................................................................... Orussus japonicus Tosawa, 1930
- Abdominal tergite 2 without white spot.................................................................... 5
5. Frons with distinct white spots along inner margin of eyes; antennomeres 3–4 with yellow-white spot or stripe dorsally. Apical half of forewing distinctly infuscate with a pale macula just beyond apex of pterostigma which is not extending to posterior margin of wing, narrow apical margin of forewing distinctly hyaline, not infuscate. Legs largely black. Abdominal terga 3–7 red or reddish brown................................................................................... 6
- Frons without distinct white spots; antennomeres black, if rarely antennomeres 4–5 pale brown dorsally, then legs largely orange. Apical 0.3 of forewing distinctly infuscate toward extreme apex, hyaline band beyond pterostigma extending to posterior margin of wing ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 F). Abdominal segments of uniform color, dark brown to black............................ 7
6. Hyaline spot outside of pterostigma extending to apex of cell 1Rs, apical hyaline band of fore wing broad, about as long as length of pterostigma. Tergum 8 more or less reddish brown. Antennomeres 4–5 yellow- white dorsally. Northeastern China ( Vilhelmsen et al. 2014), Turkey, Iran, Central Asia ( Kazakhstan), Primorskij and Chabarowskij kray (E-Russia), and North Korea ( Vilhelmsen 2003 and Blank et al. 2006), Saghalien of Russia, Europe........... Orussus abietinus (Scopoli, 1763)
- Hyaline spot outside of pterostigma not extending to apex of cell 1Rs, apical hyaline band of fore wing narrower than half length of pterostigma. Tergum 8 black. Antennomere 4 with a small white spot dorsally, antennomere 5 entirely black. North and South Korea........................................................... Orussus coreanus Takeuchi, 1938
7. Femora black except a white spot near apex. Tibia black with white stripe. Tarsus black.............................. 8
- Femora red or reddish brown except a white spot near apex. Tibia reddish brown with white stripe. Tarsus reddish brown or infuscate............................................................................................ 9
8. Basal half of forewing clearly infuscate, not distinctly paler toward base. Dorsal white stripe on hind tibia less than 0.3 times tibial length. Center of mesoscutellum sparsely punctured, interspaces shiny. Lateral ocellus situated between level of second and third tubercles. China ( Taiwan................................... Orussus brunneus Shinohara & Smith, 1983
- Basal half of forewing infuscate but distinctly paler toward base. Dorsal white stripe on hind tibia in female about 0.5 times tibial length. Mesoscutellum densely punctured except margins. Lateral ocellus situated between level of third and fourth
tubercles. South Korea............................................... Orussus melanosoma Lee & Wei , sp. nov. 9. Antennomeres 4–5 pale brown dorsally. Frons irregularly areolate-rugose (Fig. 58 in Vilhelmsen et al. 2014).
