Head pale brown to brown. Compound eyes brown, ocelli yellow with black inner margin. Antenna dark. Mouthparts yellowish brown, with mandibles reddish brown on distal half.

Prothorax yellowish brown, dorsally with pair of brown vittae on lateral margins; meso– and metathorax dark brown with each centre yellowish brown. Legs dark with short, dense, brownish setae; coxae, trochanter, and femora sometimes much paler, tarsal claws dark red. Wings hyaline with brownish marks; pterostigma long, pale yellow; costal area with a long brown stripe before pterostigma. Forewing ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 1–9 ) proximal marks with a few small spots and sometimes connected with each other; median transverse band narrow, extending to 1A; distal marks much paler, sometimes forming short, transverse bands; forewing costal area with one brown mark on proximal 1/3. Hindwing similarly marked, but with proximal half hyaline; median transverse band extending to Cu. Veins yellowish brown with costal crossveins dark. Rs four–branched, R 2 distally three–branched; three crossveins between R 1 and Rs; M two–branched; 1A two–branched.

Abdomen dark. Tenth tergum ( Figs. 36, 38 View FIGURES 36–39 ) in lateral view subquadrate with rounded distal margin; in dorsal view strongly inflated distally. Tenth sternum ( Figs. 36–37 View FIGURES 36–39 ) strongly sclerotized; in ventral view triangular, with proximal margin arcuately incised, and with tip rounded and slightly incised medially; in lateral view slightly curved dorsad, distal half much wider with blunt tip

Female. Body length 30–32 mm; forewing length 36–41 mm, hindwing length 32–37 mm.

Eighth sternum subtrapezoidal in lateral view, with distal margin strongly produced posteriorly. Tenth tergum ( Fig. 39 View FIGURES 36–39 ) short and thick, obliquely directed dorsad, with dorsodistal corner posteriorly produced. Gonocoxite ( Fig. 39 View FIGURES 36–39 ) membranous, subquadrate, vertically directed dorsad.

Distribution. China (Hubei, Hunan, Anhui, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangxi, Guangdong).

Remarks. This species appears to be closely related to N. occidentalis in having similar wing patterns, but can be easily separated from N. occidentalis by the male tenth sternum in lateral view with the distal half distinctly widened and the subquadrate female gonocoxite. In N. occidentalis , the male tenth sternum is feebly widened on the median portion and the female gonocoxite is much narrower and distinctly pointed at tip. According to the records of Weele (1910) and Yang & Yang (1999), N. sinensis is widely distributed from North China to South China. The label data of the lectotype also indicates its distribution in North China. However, after our extensive collection in China and re-examination to a large series of specimens, N. sinensis is restricted to South China. The previous distribution records of N. sinensis from North China might be due to the misunderstanding of the range of North China by some early European collectors.
