Head yellowish brown to dark brown. Compound eyes brown, ocelli pale yellow with black inner margin. Antenna dark. Mouthparts yellowish brown, sometimes with mandibles much darker.

Prothorax yellowish brown, dorsally with pair of dark brown vittae on lateral margins; meso– and metathorax pale brown with lateral portions much darker. Legs blackish brown with short, dense, yellowish setae; femora sometimes pale brown, tarsal claws reddish brown. Wings ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 1–9 ) hyaline with brownish marks; pterostigma short, pale yellow. Forewing with a short brown stripe proximal and distal to pterostigma, and with one brown mark on proximal costal area; proximal marks small and sometimes obscure; median transverse band broad and sometimes faded, extending from C to M; distal marks mostly connected with each other, much paler or absent. Hindwing similarly marked, but with proximal half hyaline. Veins brown. Rs four–branched, R 2 distally three–branched, three crossveins between R 1 and Rs; M two–branched; 1A two– branched.

Abdomen dark. Tenth tergum ( Figs. 32, 34 View FIGURES 32–35 ) in lateral view subquadrate with rounded distal margin; in dorsal view strongly inflated distally. Tenth sternum ( Figs. 32–33 View FIGURES 32–35 ) strongly sclerotized; in ventral view broad, with proximal margin V–shaped and with tip slightly incised; in lateral view slightly curved dorsad, strongly inflated in distal half.

Female. Body length 29–40 mm; forewing length 40–45 mm, hindwing length 37–41 mm.

Eighth sternum subtrapezoidal in lateral view, with distal margin strongly produced posteriorly. Tenth tergum ( Fig. 35 View FIGURES 32–35 ) short and thick with tip acutely pointed. Gonocoxite ( Fig. 35 View FIGURES 32–35 ) membranous, subquadrate, directed dorsad.

Distribution. China (Beijing, Chongqing, Gansu, Hebei, Heilongjiang, Henan, Hubei, Shannxi, Sichuan).

Remarks. This species appears to be closely related to N. nigris in having similar male genitalia, but can be easily separated from N. nigris by the faded wing patterns and the subquadrate female gonocoxite. In N. nigris , the wing patterns are distinct and the female gonocoxite is foliate with the ventrodistal margin incised. Currently, only N. rotundatus extends to northeastern China, representing the northernmost distribution of Neochauliodes .
