Antirrhinum sempervirens Lapeyrouse (1795: 7 View in CoL , tab. 4)

Type (lectotype [first-step], designated by Rothmaler (1956: 59)):—[ FRANCE] “Pyrenaeis, Gèdre, ad muris ecclesiae (Lapeyrouse, non vidi)”.

(TLM [without number]). Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7 .

Lapeyrouse’s protologue (1795: 7) consisted of a short description in Latin “ ANTIRRHINUM corollis ecaudatis: foliis oppositis ovatis, sempervirentibus: caule fruticoso” followed by the provenance: “Sur les murs de l’Église de Gerdre, dans la vallée de Lavedan ”, several comments to differentiate this species of A. molle Linnaeus (1753: 1198) , and a description in French. The protologue also provided an excellent illustration ( Lapeyrouse 1795: tab. 4) that can be considered original material (see https://www.e-rara.ch/zuz/content/pageview/16199426).

Rothmaler (1956: 59) indicated the type as: “Typus: Pyrenaeis, Gèdre, ad muris ecclesiae (Lapeyrouse, non vidi)”, and Sutton (1988; 71) mentioned as type also a material collected by Lapeyrouse “Type: France: Hautes Pyrénées; ‘Pyrenaeis, Gèdre ad muris ecclesiae’ Lapeyrouse s.n. (iso. BM! K!)”. However, as Sutton (1988) indicated two specimens as type, this mention not constitutes an effective designation of a lectotype.

Effectively, there is an herbarium sheet at K, K000806730, that bears a specimen of this species, a plant fragment with leaves, flowers and fruits. This specimen is labelled “ antirrhinum sempervirens / Lap. [probably handwritten by Lapeyrouse] fl. pyr. p. 354. / Decand. flfr. 2657. / Lapeyr. 1814 [handwritten by Candolle]” (image of the sheet available at http://apps.kew.org/herbcat/getImage.do?imageBarcode=K000806730). Also in the herbarium BM, there is a sheet, with barcode BM000613007, which bears a specimen of A. sempervirens collected by Lapeyrouse. The sheet BM000613007 bears three plant fragments with leaves and flowers, and a label handwritten by J.J. Roemer “ Antirrhinum sempervirens Lapeyr. Fl. Pyren. / A. corollis ecaudatis, foliis ellipticis oppositis sempervirentibus, flori- / bus axillaribus, caule frutescente. Lapeyr. pl. des Pyren. p. 354, n. 21 / Decand. fl. fr. n. 2657 / D. Lapeyrouse”, and another one label handwritten by Lapeyrouse? “In Pyrenais”. However, there are doubts to consider this specimen as part of the original material (see Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 ).

On the other hand, in the Herbarium Willdenow in Berlin at B, the specimen B.W 11324-01 0 results also relevant (image available at http://ww2.bgbm.org/Herbarium/specimen.cfm?Barcode=BW11324010). This specimen, with leaves, flowers and immature fruits, is annotated in the upper right corner “ Ant. sempervirens 1.” by Willdenow, and “Lapeyrouse” in the lower right corner by Diederich Franz Leonhard Schlechtendal. Schlechtendal’s annotations of personal names in the lower right corner of the sheets represent the person from which Willdenow received the material, which is not necessarily the collector. The sheet also bears a label “antirrhinum / sempervirens / flor. Pyren. Tab. 4 / (Lapeyrouse)”. The letter of this label (except the word “Lapeyrouse”) is the same that the letter of the label of the sheet at K “ Antirrhinum sempervirens / Lap.” and belongs to Lapeyrouse according to the autographic identification published by Burdet (1976: 155–156) .

In addition, we have found two specimens of Antirrhinum sempervirens collected by Lapeyrouse preserved at TLM and LD. The sheet at TLM bears three stems, with leaves, flowers and fruits (and seeds), and an original label handwritten by Lapeyrouse “ Antirrhinum sempervirens / Lapeyr / Sur les murs de l’Église de / Gerdre au Pont de Meyabat / sur les roches calcaires, Pyré / [illegible], Pale d’Esquierry / clot du toro bas”. The provenance of this material matches with the geographical provenance mentioned in the protologue “Sur les murs de l’Église de Gerdre, dans la vallée de Lavedan ”. Finally, the sheet at LD LD1739019 bears a stem with leaves, flowers and immature fruits, and is annotated “Pyrenaeae. Lapeyr.” handwritten by Lapeyrouse and “ A. sempervirens . Lapeyr. W. Sp.” on the base of the specimen (see http://herbarium.emg.umu.se/record.php?Genus= Antirrhinum &Species=sempervirens&Page=1 &AaccNr=1739019&Ainst=LD&Acoll=&Aid=75850564&nrRecords=2).

Rothmaler’s indication (1956: 59) certainly satisfies the Art. 7.10 and 7.11 of the ICN and could constitutes an effective lectotype designation, because he clearly indicates the “type element” mentioned in the Art. 7.11 (“… if the type element is clearly indicated…”) since an element can be considered as “…a single specimen or gathering…or illustration…” as indicated in the Art. 40.3 of the ICN. In this sense, the lectotypification proposed by Rothmaler (1956: 59) could be further narrowed to a single specimen by a “second-step” lectotypification according to Art. 9.17 of the ICN.

In conclusion, we designate the specimen at TLM as the lectotype (by a second-step lectotypification) of Antirrhinum sempervirens . This material is well preserved and complete and shows several of the diagnostic characters for this taxon, and matches the traditional concept and current use of the name (see e.g., Rothmaler 1956, Webb 1972, Sutton 1988, Bolòs & Vigo 1996, Güemes 2009, Tison et al. 2014).

However, is important to comment that Lapeyrouse mentioned in the protologue “Culture. J’ai porté des pieds de cet arbuste dans les Jardins de l’Académie. Je l’ai élevé de graine. Il a prospéré même en pleine terre; seulement il s’est tenu plus bas et plus touffu, et ses fleurs se sont rapetissées. Elles n’en produisent pas moins un charmant effet par leur nombre, et sur-tout par leur durée successive. Élevé en pot et retiré dans l’orangerie durant l’hyver, il réussit mieux, et fleurit plutôt et plus longtems”. In this sense, perhaps the specimens mentioned above and preserved at B, BM, K, and LD, were made with material grown in the “Jardins de l’Académie” [the Académie Royale des Sciences de Toulouse], this may explain the lack of date of collection on the labels of these sheets.
