Antirrhinum siculum Miller (1768 View in CoL : Antirrhinum No. 6)
Type (neotype, designated here):— [ ITALY], Sicily, Siracusa, Sortino, Montes Iblei , Riserva Naturale-Orientata Pantalica-Valle dell’Anapo, 120 m, 8 June 2000, J. Güemes et al., JGH-3340 (VAL136890, isoneotype SALA106896 About SALA ). Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 .
The protologue of Antirrhinum siculum ( Miller1768: Antirrhinum No. 6)includes a Latin diagnosis,“6. ANTIRRHINUM (Siculum) foliis linearibus floribus petiolatis axillaribus”, followed by the English translation “ Snap-dragon with narrow leaves and flowers, with foot-stalks proceeding from the wings of the leaves ”, and the synonym “ Antirrhinum siculum linariae folio niveo flore. Bocc. Mus.”. The protologue also includes a brief English description “The sixth sort is an annual plant, which seldom grows more than a foot high; the leaves of this are very narrow and smooth; the flowers come out from the wings of the leaves single, standing on long footstalks; these are very white, with a dark bottom. If the seeds of this sort are permitted to scatter, the plants will come up, and require no other care but to thin them and keep them clean from weeds”. Unfortunately, we have not found any mention of this species in the Boccone’s works (1674, 1697a, 1697b) (see also Pulvirenti et al. 2017a, 2017b, Costa et al. 2018), the author that was cited by Miller in the protologue as “Bocc. Mus.”.
Rothmaler (1956: 82) indicated as type: “Typus: Sicilia (Boccone resp. Miller, non vidi)”, and Sutton (1988: 97) mentioned “Type: Sicily: “ Palermo; Palermo Gussone s.n. (not located)”. We have not found any original material of Antirrhinum siculum in the herbaria consulted (BM, K). Accordingly, in the absence of any other extant original material, a neotype can be designated according to Art. 9.8 of the ICN.
In this sense, a complete modern specimen is selected as the neotype. This specimen was collected in Siracusa (Sicily, Italy) and is preserved at VAL, with barcode VAL136890 ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 ). The collection geographic provenance of the neotype agrees with the protologue of A. siculum . Further, the specimen neotype (several plant fragments with welldeveloped leaves, flowers and fruits) clearly represents the traditional concept and current application of the name (e.g., Rothmaler 1956, Webb 1972, Sutton 1988, Güemes 2009, Pignatti 2018).
