TYPE LOCALITY: India, Madras .
DISTRIBUTION: Pakistan; India; Sri Lanka; introduced into Java and Mauritius.
COMMENT: Includes ruficaudatus ; see Prater, 1965, Indian Animals, p. 219. L. ruficaudatus is closer to capensis according to Petter, 1961, Z. Saugetierk., 26:1- 11. L. ruficaudatus may be a distinct species (JECF). May include whytei , crawshayi , peguensis and siamensis ; see Petter, 1961, Z. Saugetierk., 26:1- 11; but also see comments under peguensis and saxatilis .
