Haplothrips flavitibia Williams View in CoL

Haplothrips flavitibia Williams, 1916, p. 283 View in CoL .

Recorded from England and Germany ( Mound et al. 1976), but apparently on very few specimens, this species is closely similar to the more widespread H. globiceps from which it is distinguished in the key above. The mid and hind tibiae of H. flavitibia are clear yellow, whereas those of H. globiceps are brown in the basal third or more, but further material is needed to determine if this difference is stable. The species was recorded from Iran, in Fars, Kerman, Khorasan and Tehran Provinces ( Kheyrandish Koshkoei et al. 2000; Minaei and Alichi 2001; Alavi and Kamali 2003; Pirafkan et al. 2007), but these specimens have not been examined in the present study.

Diagnosis

Head, body, all femora and antennal segment I dark blackish-brown; tibiae and tarsi clear yellow; antennal segment II brown, paler distally, segments III– VI yellow; forewing sub-basal setae pale; pronotal setae dark; all major setae with white tip. Head slightly longer than wide; postocular setae blunt, about 0.7 as long as eyes; maxillary stylets about 0.3–0.4 of head width, retracted to postocular setae; antennal segment III with one sensorium (cf. Figure 28 View Figures 22–31 ). Fore tarsal tooth apparently absent (cf. Figures 4, 5, 7 View Figures 1–9 ). Pronotum with four pairs of setae, anteromarginals acute and minute, as long as discal setae. Mesopresternum boat shaped. Forewing with six to seven duplicated cilia; sub-basal setae S1, S2 blunt, S3 more or less blunt, not pointed. Pelta triangular (cf. Figure 16 View Figures 10–21 ); tergite IX setae S1, S2 and S3 acute, S1 on other tergites finely pointed.
