Haplothrips caespitis Priesner View in CoL

Haplothrips caespitis Priesner, 1936 a, p. 94 View in CoL .

This species was recorded from Iran by Bagheri and Alavi (2007), based on an identification by Richard zur Strassen as ‘‘perhaps H. caespitis View in CoL ’’ after examining the following three specimens: 1 „, 1♀ from Cymbopogon olivieri View in CoL , one individual (sex not mentioned) from Carthamus oxyacantha (2007 personal communication from Saeid Bagheri). The present authors have not seen any Iranian specimens of this species, and the following notes and inclusion in the previous key are based on a paratype in the collections of the Natural History Museum, London. Judging from the structure of this specimen, this species is associated with grasses. However, the identity of the species recorded from Iran requires confirmation.

Diagnosis

Head with maxillary stylets retracted to eyes, scarcely one-tenth of head width apart medially; postocular setae acute, scarcely extending beyond posterior margin of eyes. Pronotal major setae acute and short, epimeral and posteroangular setae longest but scarcely longer than antennal segment III. Fore tarsal tooth minute. Mesopresternum reduced to two triangles. Forewing with five or six duplicated cilia; sub-basal setae arranged in a triangle, finely acute and shorter than epimeral setae. Metanotum with one pair of setae medially. Abdominal tergites VII and VIII with seven or eight minor setae medially; tergite IX setae S1 and S2 finely acute, about 0.6 times as long as tube; tube 1.8 times as long as basal width.

Material examined

Sudan: Blue Nile Province, Managil , 1 ♀ at roots of Cymbopogon proximus , 16.i.1930 .

Haplothrips clarisetis Priesner

Haplothrips (Trybomiella) View in CoL clarisetis Priesner, 1931, p. 237 View in CoL .

This widespread Afrotropical species is the only member of the subgenus Trybomiella View in CoL known from Iran. It has been recorded from Tehran, Yazd, Kerman, Khorasan and Fars Provinces from various plants ( Kheyrandish Koshkoei et al. 2000; Mohaghegh and Kheyrandish Koshkoei 2002; Alavi and Kamali 2003; zur Strassen 2003; Alemansour and Fallahzadeh 2004). Few specimens have been studied, and although phytophagous the host plant is not known.

Diagnosis

Body black, fore tarsi yellowish brown; antennal segment III yellowish, IV paler than V but darker than III, major body setae pale except bases of anal setae. Head with postocular setae blunt, a little more than half length of eyes; antennal segment III with two sensoria (cf. Figure 27 View Figures 22–31 ). Fore tarsal tooth apparently absent (cf. Figures 4, 5, 7 View Figures 1–9 ). Pronotum with four pairs of capitate setae, midlaterals similar to discal setae. Forewings without duplicated cilia; sub-basal wing setae S1, S2 and S3 capitate. Tergite IX setae S1, S2 and S3 pointed at apex, S1 on tergites I–V blunt, on other tergites pointed or finely pointed. Tube short (cf. Figure 31 View Figures 22–31 ), about twice as long as basal width.

Material examined

Iran: Fars Province, Noorabad , 1 ♀ from Allium sp. , 23.iii.2005 . Mazandaran Province: Dooab (Savad-Koh), 1 ♀ from Hordeum vulgare , 28.iv.2005. Tehran

Province: Varamin, 1 ♀ from Euphorbia sp. , 6.iv.2005; Firooz-Koh, 5 ♀ from Euphorbia sp. , 28.iv.2005.
