Haplothrips aculeatus (Fabricius)

This Holarctic species is widespread from Europe to Japan on various Poaceae , and has been found commonly on such plants in north and south Iran.

Diagnosis

Body colour brown to dark brown; femora concolourous with body, fore tibia yellowish apically, mid and hind tibiae brown to dark brown, all tarsi yellowish; antennal segments III–V brownish yellow but gradually darkened distally, VI–VIII brown to dark brown; forewings pale except for basal shadings, major body setae pale, anal setae brownish. Head with maxillary stylets about one-third of head width apart, retracted to postocular setae; postocular setae pointed, extending beyond posterior margin of eyes, shorter than eyes; antennal segment III with one sensorium (cf. Figure 28 ). Pronotal anteromarginal setae usually reduced, as long as or scarcely twice as long as discal setae; epimeral setae finely pointed. Fore tarsal tooth present, but minute. Forewing with four to nine duplicated cilia; sub-basal setae finely pointed. Pelta ( Figure 15 ) trapezoidal or hat-shaped; tergite VII with two campaniform sensilla relatively close together, with two micro-setae laterally; tergite VIII campaniform sensilla further apart ( Figure 32 ), the micro-setae between them or sometimes in front of them; tergite IX setae S1 pointed at apex ( Figure 31 ), rarely weakly blunt; S2 and S3 acute; S1 on other tergites pointed or finely pointed. Tube short, about twice as long as basal width ( Figure 31 ); anal setae longer than tube. Male similar to female but smaller; fore tarsal tooth variable from minute to well-developed. Pseudovirga slender, narrowed towards apex ( Figure 40 ).
