EOO: 8 km ². AOO: 8 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Near Threatened.
Eugenia huasteca has a restricted distribution, only known for five records in the state of Querétaro, in the municipality of Jalpan de Sierra. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) fall within the thresholds of Critically Endangered category under the criteria B. As the records are very close to each other, there is only one location. This species is also considered rare. The biome where it occurs is the Humid Montane Forest within the “Reserva de la Biosfera de Sierra Gorda”, in Querétaro. No activities have been identified that lead to continued habitat decline, yet some agricultural and livestock activities in the region are under sustainable management. In general, the protected area is well-managed, and it occurs on steep slopes which are very difficult to access ( Luna et al. 1988, 1989, 1994, CONABIO 2018). Although there is no information on plausible future threats in the area, any stochastic event could drive the taxon to a threatened category in a very short term. Therefore, Eugenia huasteca is classified here as Near Threatened (NT), as it meets the criteria B1a+B2a.
