Osbornellus albocinctus De Long View in CoL
( Figs. 51a–51e)
Osbornellus albocinctus DeLong 1941b: 266 View in CoL , Metcalf 1967: 2179.
Osbornellus digitus DeLong and Martinson, 1976b: 584 View in CoL . New synonymy.
Redescription. Length: 4.8–5.3 mm. Member of the O. rarus group ( Fig. 1b). Vertex roundedly angulate; median length slightly less than distance between eyes at posterior margin. White apical spot with pale, slightly curved lines laterally, widened at middle and reaching ocelli. Large triangular spot behind, connected to apical spot. Ocellar markings surrounded with brown. Brown spot behind each ocellus with pale spot on inner margin. Short, wide, transverse brown stripe at apex of coronal suture bordered with brown; rest of vertex white. Pronotum whitish-yellow with band of irregular light and dark spots in basal angles. Scutellum white with large brown spots in basal angle. Anterior wing transparent, yellowish, with many white spots and oblong brown mark; veins brown; usually with brown spots along costa and comissural lines.
Male genitalia: Pygofer about 1.5 times as long as width, moderately projected posteriorly, apex very wide, almost square, dorsally short and ventrally rounded; macrosetae long, few, dispersed along apical half, apex slightly concave ( Fig. 51a). Valve with margins rounded, ventral margin pointed, anterior part slightly curved medially. Plate with basal portion wide, apical portion short, narrow, apex rounded and setae short, plumose at apex ( Fig. 51b). Style with apophysis short, straight, slender and apex truncate ( Fig. 51c). Aedeagus in ventral view narrow at base, expanded and rounded at sides, narrowed below; dorsal projection with lateral extensions, pointed; shaft slender, straight, apex pointed, longer than ventral processes ( Fig. 51d). Ventral processes arising at one fourth length of aedeagus, tapered, narrow, apressed, apices pointed. In lateral view shaft slender, semicircular, curved dorsad, apex pointed, longer than ventral processes; dorsal projection wider subapically, apex truncate. Gonopore subapical. Ventral processes tapered, apressed to shaft, slender, curved dorsad, apices pointed ( Fig. 51e).
Diagnosis. Very similar to O. hansoni , but in ventral view the apices of the aedeagal processes of O. albocinctus are convergent and in lateral view the apices are curved dorsad, whereas in O. hansoni the apices of the ventral processes are not convergent in ventral view and in lateral view the apices are straight.
Comments. In the unpublished thesis of Martinson (1977) Osbornellus digitus DeLong and Martinson, 1976 , was synonymized with O. albocinctus . Although we were unable to examen the holotype of O. digitus , we did examine specimens collected from the type locality with a similar date and agree with this synonymy.
Distribution. Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama; 50–2200 m.
