Osbornellus blantoni Linnavuori View in CoL

( Figs. 54a–54e)

Osbornellus blantoni Linnavuori 1959: 216 View in CoL .

Osbornellus lacunis DeLong and Martinson 1976b: 596 View in CoL (Type locality: México). New synonymy.

Redescription. Length: 3.8–5.0 mm. Member of the O. rarus group ( Fig. 13). Vertex triangular, light color extending behind apical band and transversely elongate near ocelli, surrounded by dark brown. Dark brown mark surrounding each ocellus posteriorly, with clear spot above internal margin ( Fig. 13). Pronotum mottled brown, orange in the middle of anterior margin. Scutellum with broad light brown mark, margined laterally with brown on posterior half, with light brown spots in basal angles. Anterior wing transparent.

Male genitalia: Pygofer moderately projected posteriorly, apex widey rounded; macrosetae very long, distributed along apical third of pygofer ( Fig.54a). Valve ovate, with margins rounded, slightly curved. Plates long, apex pointed and setae plumose ( Fig. 54b). Style with apophysis short, with striae, apex truncate, lobulate ( Fig. 54c). In ventral view aedeagus with base narrow, straight, lateral margin rounded; shaft straight, narrow, apex rounded and wider toward apex, shaft shorter than ventral process ( Fig. 54d). Ventral processes arising a little beyond mid point of aedeagal length, divergent, narrow, with apices pointed; ventral processes with sclerotized spirals. In lateral view shaft with base narrow then widening toward apex, curved slightly caudad, apex truncate, shorter than ventral processes; dorsal projection tapered, curved caudad. Gonopore apical. Ventral process arising close to base of shaft, curved dorsad, apices pointed, with sclerotized spirals ( Fig. 54e).

Diagnosis. Very similar to O. fulvomaculatus and O. bartletti , but in lateral view the aedeagal shaft of O. blantoni is close to the ventral processes and curved caudad. In O. fulvomaculatus the shaft is curved dorsad, and in O. bartletti it is also curved dorsad and separate from the ventral processes.

Distribution. Belize, Costa Rica, and Panama; 10–1400 m.
