Osbornellus springerae Domínguez & Godoy View in CoL , sp. nov.

( Figs. 22a–22e)

Description. Length: 4.8–6.3 mm. Member of the O. auronitens group ( Figs. 1a). General description as in O. eberhardi .

Male genitalia: Pygofer less than twice as long as wide, moderately projected posteriorly, apex narrow and rounded; with long macrosetae dispersed along apical third ( Fig. 22a). Valve oval, rounded, curved in the middle. Plate long, apex tapered, with plumose setae ( Fig. 22b). Style with apophysis short, straight and truncate ( Fig. 22c). Aedeagus in ventral view with basal portion wide and curved; shaft straight, slender, slightly longer than ventral process; apex truncate. Ventral processes arising one-quarter of the way along length of aedeagus, base wide, divergent, slender; apical third slightly expanded and divergent, with pointed apices ( Fig. 22d). In lateral view shaft slender, apex truncate, curved dorsad, nearly the same length as the ventral processes; dorsal projection short, straight, wide, narrowed at tip. Gonopore apical. Ventral processes tapered, curved dorsad, slightly separated, apices sharp ( Fig. 22e).

Diagnosis. Similar to O. anonae externally, but in ventral view the ventral processes of O. springerae arise one-quarter of the way along the length of the aedeagus and they diverge from a wide base; the shaft is nearly the same length as the ventral processes. In O. anonae , the ventral processes arise nearly half way along the length of the shaft, the base in lateral view is not as wide, and the shaft and ventral processes remain together for short distance.

Distribution. Known from Costa Rica and Panama; 300–2600 m.

Etymology. This species is named for Monika Springer in recognition of her studies of aquatic insects and help provided to the first author’s thesis research.
