Osbornellus freytagi Domínguez & Godoy View in CoL , sp. nov.
( Figs. 31a–31e)
Description. Length: 5.8–6.7 mm. Member of the O. rarus group ( Fig. 1b). Vertex angulate, median length about equal to distance between eyes at posterior margin. General color and face similar to O. rarus ; rest of vertex mottled yellow-brown; coronal suture brown, bordered with white. Pronotum brown, mottled yellowbrown with irregular light and dark markings. Scutellum mottled yellow-brown with yellow at center, bordered with pale yellow. Brown spot in basal angle margined with orange, posteriorly with white spot along each lateral margin. Anterior wing as in other members of the species group.
Male genitalia: Pygofer about 1.5 times as long as greatest wide; apical portion short, slightly projected posteriorly, apex wide and slightly concave; macrosetae medium-sized, few in number, dispersed along apical third ( Fig. 31a). Valve triangular, margins rounded. Plates long, base with a few short setae ( Fig. 31b). Style with apophysis long, curved and truncate ( Fig. 31c). In ventral view aedeagus wide at base, curved; shaft slender, truncate apically, shorter than ventral processes; dorsal projection with small extension ( Fig. 31d). Ventral processes arising close to base, very narrow, straight, close together for basal three-fifths then directed inward so that pointed apices meet. In lateral view shaft shorter than ventral processes, curved dorsad, apex rounded; dorsal projection short, widened at midlength, narrowed at tip. Gonopore subapical. Ventral processes separated from shaft at base, vertical, tapered, apices pointed, slightly curved dorsad ( Fig. 31e).
Diagnosis. Externally very similar to O. rarus and O. latus . In lateral view the aedeagal shaft of O. latus is shorter than the ventral processes and the latter are separated from shaft, straight, with the apex curved ventrad. In lateral view the shaft of O. rarus is longer than the ventral processes, and the latter are closer to the shaft and curved dorsad.
Distribution. Known only from Costa Rica; 2300–3100 m.
Etymology. This species is named in honor of Paul Freytag, in recognition of his research on cicadellids and loan of specimens for this project.
