Osbornellus anonae Linnavuori 1959: 215 View in CoL

Redescription. Length: 5.2–5.7 mm. Member of the O. auronitens group ( Fig. 1a). Vertex roundly angulate, median length less than distance between eyes at posterior margin. White band along anterior margin between ocelli, bordered anteriorly and posteriorly by dark brown bands. Narrow white area across median half of vertex behind marginal lines, bordered posteriorly by narrow brown line at apex of coronal suture. Broad, bright orange band across vertex between anterior portions of eyes. White band along posterior margin with few faint brown dots on anterior edge, short longitudinal brown line at each end. Pronotum light yellow with orange band along anterior margin, with bright orange dot in center, and opaque orange band near posterior margin, interrupted at center by lighter colored longitudinal stripe. Scutellum opaque yellow with large orange spots in basal angles, small white spots at apices of basal angles and halfway along lateral margins. Anterior wing transparent, yellowish, with some pale brown dots along costa and commissural line; apices marked with brown.

Male genitalia: Pygofer less than twice as long as width, moderately projected posteriorly, apex pointed apically; medium-sized macrosetae dispersed along apical half ( Fig. 26a). Pygofer wider than long, about twice as long as greatest width, moderately projected posteriorly apex slightly wide and rounded; macrosetae very long, distributed along distal third of pygofer. Valve triangular, margin rounded, in the anterior half slightly curved. Plates long, apex rounded, with setae plumose ( Fig. 26b). Style with apophysis short, straight ( Fig. 26c). Aedeagus in ventral view, wide at base, straight, narrow; shaft shorter than ventral processes, apex truncate ( Fig. 26d). Ventral processes arising nearly half way along the length of the aedeagus, divergent in distal third, tapered, apices pointed. In lateral view shaft and ventral processes narrow, curved dorsad, shaft the same length as the ventral processes; dorsal projection short, straight, truncate. Gonopore apical. Ventral processes very close to shaft, curved dorsad, apices pointed ( Fig. 26e).

Diagnosis. Very similar to O. springerae , but in ventral view the ventral processes of O. anonae arise from the middle part of the shaft and are separated from the shaft. In O. springerae the ventral processes arise one-third of the way along the shaft. In O. anonae the shaft is less curved and is close to the ventral processes near the apex; the dorsal projection is less conspicous than in O. springerae .

Distribution. Known from Mexico, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama; 50–1500 m.
