Key to males of northern South American Mortoniella View in CoL

(The key is to known species and should be used cautiously, in conjunction with the figures and diagnoses for the species, since many undescribed species probably exist.)

1.

— Segment IX with anterolateral margin produced in ventral ½ ( Fig. 1A View Figure 1 , 82A View Figure 82 , 90A View Figure 90 ), lateral lobes of segment usually widely divided dorsally (more than ½ width of segment ( Fig. 1B View Figure 1 , 82B View Figure 82 , 90B View Figure 90 )), exception in flinti subgroup of the bilineata group ( Fig. 19B View Figure 19 ), and M. triangularis of the ormina group ( Fig. 86B View Figure 86 ), with lobes narrowly divided [intermediate species, M. unilineata Sykora ( Fig. 78 View Figure 78 ), with segment IX slightly produced ventrally and lateral lobes separated by about ½ width of segment, treated below under couplet 41]; ventral process of segment VI elongate, narrow, and posteriorly directed (length usually 2 times width at base or more) ........ 2 Segment IX with anterolateral margin almost evenly rounded ( Fig. 28A View Figure 28 , 35A View Figure 35 ); lateral lobes of segment narrowly divided dorsally (usually much less than ½ width of segment) ( Fig. 28B View Figure 28 , 35B View Figure 35 ); ventral process of segment VI usually short (length 1-1½ times width at base), but very elongate in a few species listed as “unplaced to species group”) (subgenus Mortoniella , in part)

— Size smaller (forewing usually less than 3 mm); hind wing with fork II only ( Fig. 102B, 103B, 104B View Figures 102-104 ) (subgenus Nanotrichia ) ................................................................................................... 3 Size larger (forewing usually more than 4 mm); hind wing with forks II, III and V present ( Fig. 97B, 99B View Figures 97-99 ), or with forks II and V ( Fig. 98B View Figures 97-99 ) (subgenus Mortoniella , bilineata group) ........... 4 3(2).
