Redescription

Male

Body length. 2.6mm.

Head. Face dark, silvergrey pollinose. Scape dark, without upper bristle. Pedicel dark, with three to four short dark upper and two short dark lower bristles. Flagellum dark with slightly paler apex, shortly tapering and grey pollinose (LF:WF=2.4). Arista dark, flattened, with thickened base. Eyes meeting for 14 times diameter of ocellus. F:EM:V= 1:0.9:0.6. Frons dark, in upper third weakly brownish pollinose, otherwise silvergrey pollinose. Vertex dark, lacking pollinosity, bearing an elevated, equilateral ocellar triangle. Occiput dark, grey pollinose, changing to brown in upper half.

Thorax. Prescutum, scutum, scutellum and pleura dark. Pleura greyish pollinose.

Postpronotal lobe pale but darkened basally, grey pollinose with some postpronotal hairs present along upper margin (up to 0.06mm). Prescutum and scutum weakly and narrowly grey pollinose along anterior margin, more so around postpronotal lobe, along lateral margin down to wingbase and along posterior margin. Otherwise weakly brown pollinose, with two uniseriate dorsocentral rows of hair and some supraalar hairs. Scutellum predominantly weakly grey pollinose with some brown pollinosity in anterior half and a fringe of about 12 short hairs (up to 0.04mm) along posterior margin.

Wing. Length: 3.0mm. LW:MWW=3.4. Wing almost entirely covered with microtrichia. Only small basal cells of wing, e.g. bc, and the very beginning of cell c, br, bm and cup with somewhat reduced microtrichia. Pterostigma dark and complete (LS:LTC=1.0). LTC:LFC=0.7. rm reaches dm shortly before basal third of the cells length. M 1 undulating in its middle.

Halter . Length: 0.4mm. Base and knob dark, stem white.

Legs. Coxae dark, weakly grey pollinose. Front coxa with a somewhat paler narrow anterior apical margin. Mid coxa with two long dark anterior bristles on inner apical corner. Trochanters dark, grey pollinose with shining patches. Femora dark, narrowly pale at apices, weakly grey pollinose except hind femur shining posteroventrally. Mid femur bearing two ventral rows of distinct peglike spines in apical half. Tibiae weakly grey pollinose, pale in basal third and narrowly at apices (can be almost entirely pale dorsally), otherwise dark. Front and mid tibiae with small apical spines. Hind tibia with a wrinkled indentation midanteriorly. Tarsi dark but basal segments can be slightly paler, weakly grey pollinose. Pulvilli slightly shorter than distitarsi.

Abdomen. Ground colour dark. Tergite 1 with two strong, dark lateral bristles. Tergite 1 to 5 (postero) laterally grey pollinose, only slightly extending onto dorsal surface along the posterior margin (especially on tergite 1), otherwise brown pollinose. Syntergosternite 8 dark and swollen, without a triangular dorsal depression on the side of outer surstylus. Viewed caudally, membranous area small, ovate, placed to the lower right ( Fig. 10c View FIGURE 10 ). Sternite 1 to 5 dark, grey pollinose. Sternite 6 dark, grey pollinose. Sternite 7 dark, not entirely fused with syntergosternite 8 (a distinct suture between sternite 7 and syntergosternite 8 is visible).

Genitalia.

Genital capsule dorsal view: Epandrium pale apically, longer than wide (MLE:MWE =1.3). Surstyli asymmetrical, but both of triangular shape ( Fig. 10j View FIGURE 10 ). Inner surstylus clearly broader than outer one.

Genital capsule ventral view: Gonopods unequal, inner one minute, outer one of medium size ( Fig. 10a View FIGURE 10 ). Phallus trifid, with ejaculatory ducts semicircular to folded ( Fig. 10e View FIGURE 10 ). Phallic guide simple, long and narrow, in its middle with a distinct bent of about 20° towards outer gonopod ( Fig. 10a View FIGURE 10 ).

Genital capsule lateral view: Epandrium without projecting lobe on either side. Both surstyli only slightly bent towards sternites ( Figs 10i, k View FIGURE 10 ). Phallic guide narrow and straight ( Fig. 10b View FIGURE 10 ).

Outer surstylus in ventral view: No small projecting hook is situated at the lower inner corner.

Ejaculatory apodeme: Very large, balloonshaped ( Fig. 10d View FIGURE 10 ).

Female

Differing from the male in the following points:

Body length. 2.5–2.8mm.

Head. Flagellum tapering (LF:WF=2.9–3.3), with lower third pale or pale with base darkened ( Fig. 10f View FIGURE 10 ). Front facets moderately enlarged (0.04mm). Frons dark, widened in middle (MWF:WFA=1.2), silvergrey pollinose in lower quarter to third, the following quarter only with weak silvergrey pollinosity. Lateral rows of setae starting shortly after ocellar triangle and ending before lower quarter. A small tubercle shortly above antenna is visible. Occiput with brown pollinosity in upper third to quarter.

Thorax. Prescutum and scutum laterally grey pollinose down to postalar callus.

Wing. Length: 2.7–2.9mm. LW:MWW=3.0–3.2. LTC:LFC=0.5–0.8. Pterostigma can be incomplete (LS:LTC=0.8–1.0).

Legs. Posteroventral row of mid femur restricted to some spines towards apex. Tibiae less darkened, dorsally entirely pale. Front and mid tibiae with longer apical spines. Pulvilli as long as distitarsi.

Abdomen. Tergite 6 posterolaterally grey pollinose, this pollinosity almost meeting on dorsal surface over approximately two thirds of the tergite s length, otherwise brown pollinose. Viewed dorsally, tergite 5 longer than tergite 4. LT35:WT5=1.1–1.3. WT5:LT5=2.0–2.3.

Ovipositor. Base dark, weakly grey pollinose. Piercer pale with distal part shining. Viewed dorsally ( Fig. 10h View FIGURE 10 ), base small, rather triangular, without longitudinal median furrow. Suture between tergites 7 and 8 hardly visible as a narrow shining band. Anal opening ovate. Viewed laterally ( Fig. 10g View FIGURE 10 ), dorsal surface of tergite 7 humped, describing an angle of approximately 135°. Sternite 8 slightly swollen. Distal part of piercer straight. Piercer reaching posterior margin of sternite 4. LP:LB=1.8–2.1. LDP:LPP=1.5–1.8.

Discussion

Cli. uniformis ( Brunetti, 1917) comb. nov. clearly belongs to the ruralis species group, hence the proposed transfer to the genus Clistoabdominalis . It is most closely allied to the European Cli. tumidus ( De Meyer, 1997) , a species recently illustrated in Kehlmaier (2005). Male Cli. uniformis can be differentiated from the latter by the dorsal and lateral shape of the surstyli ( Figs 10i–k View FIGURE 10 ) as well as by the distinctly bent phallic guide ( Fig. 10a View FIGURE 10 ). Kapoor et al. (1987) also provide a redescription of and drawings for Cli. uniformis in their work on Pipunculidae from India. The taxon is currently recorded from India, Myanmar and Pakistan.
