Polymniella Verrill, 1900 View in CoL

Verrill, 1900:660–661. Hartman, 1942:74.— Fauchald, 1977a:132.

Type species: Eupolymnia (Polymniella) aurantiaca Verrill, 1900 , by monotypy.

Diagnosis (emended): Three pairs of discontinuous branched branchiae on segments 3, 4 and 7; eyespots absent; lateral lappets absent; ventral shields from segment 2; nephridial papillae from segments 6; pairs of notopodia from segment 4 along almost the total length of the body; notochaetae distally dentate; neuropodia from segment 5, uncini avicular, MF:4:4, in single rows on segments 5–10; in double rows, arranged face to face, until posterior end.

Remarks: Polymniella has only one species described, Polymniella aurantiaca Verrill, 1900 , from Bermuda. Verrill (1900) stated that branchiae occurred in segments 2, 3 and 6, and that notopodia began in segment 2. Hartman (1942) emended the characters for the genus and stated that branchiae occur in segments 1, 2 and 5 and notopodia begin in segment 1, with the first pair of branchiae. Nevertheless, after the revision of the type specimen, the first segments are not easily counted because their divisions are not clear. The use of methyl green stain here indicates an arrangement of the branchiae, occurring on segment 3, 4 and 7. Thus, the first notopodia is in the second segment with branchiae.
