Pepsis macula Fabricius 1804: 210 . Holotype: 3, Saudi Arabia: no specific locality ( MNHN, possibly lost). Sphex lugens Kohl 1889: 25 . Syntypes: Ƥ, 3, Armenia: Arax River Valley: no specific locality ( NHMW). Synonymized with Sphex macula by W. Schulz 1911: 165.

Sphex eatoni E. Saunders 1910: 518 . Syntypes: Ƥ, 3, Algeria: Biskra ( OXUM). Synonymized with Sphex macula by de Beaumont 1962: 221.

Prionyx macula: Bohart & Menke 1976: 133 ; Kazenas 1998: 114; 2002: 29; Pulawski 2012: 16.

Material examined: 17 Ƥ, 17 3 from Iran, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan. Distribution: Israel, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Kenya.

Sphex melanotus F. Morawitz 1890: 575 . Lectotype, designated here: Ƥ, Transcaspia (most likely Turkmenistan): no specific locality ( ZIN), examined.

Material examined: 45 Ƥ, 37 3 from Turkmenistan.

Distribution: Turkmenistan.

Remark. The lectotype is a specimen originally in Ferdinand F. Morawitz collection, donated to him by General Alexander V. Komarov.
